"I found my calling in the construction industry, a field I initially knew nothing about when I moved to the U.S. with my family when I was 17. Now many years later, I’m a mechanical engineer by education and part of a team working on large-scale data centers across the U.S. I grew up in Bogota, Colombia. Moving from a city like Bogota to Morrisville, North Carolina, where my uncle lived, was a huge culture shock. Leaving behind my friends and the life I knew was tough, especially since I had to navigate a new educational system in my senior year of high school. Despite these challenges, I forged ahead determined to make the most of the opportunities in front of me. After high school, I always knew I wanted to study engineering as I love understanding how things work and are put together from a very young age. After college, I thought about going into design at first and then I learned about construction. It’s not only about constructing buildings but also about the people behind it. I enjoy the combination of technical challenges and the chance to work with amazing teams, solving problems and bringing incredible buildings and facilities to life. It’s what energizes me the most every day. One of the reasons I am so passionate about our Hispanic/ Latiné Employee Resource Group is because of my journey and the cultural shock I experienced when I first moved to the U.S. I had a support system to help me through the transition and I can’t imagine what it feels like with little to no support. Now I strive to support others and help create environments where everyone feels comfortable and are given the resources they need to succeed. As I think about my experience, I cherish the rich cultural heritage that I come from. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, for example, is a reminder to celebrate our roots, traditions and the importance we place on our communities and family.” Jose L Calderon is a senior MEP coordinator at DPR in Richmond, Virginia, supporting operations across the U.S. and is a #pillarofconstruction. *Our Pillars of Construction series celebrates the diverse experiences and perspectives of DPR employees, reflecting on how our histories and culture shape us. #dprconstruction #HispanicHeritageMonth
