    Advancements in satellite image processing can aid tree counting for agroforestry applications! Automated workflows using advancements in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) technologies now enable regular, accurate estimation of tree populations and rapid identification of each tree across vast areas. How does it work? 1️⃣ High-resolution optical satellites capture sub-meter imagery. 2️⃣ Cloud-free images are processed through CV and pre-trained ML models Tree counts are generated with impressive accuracy. 3️⃣ The longitude and latitude of each tree across 1000s of square kilometres are computed and delivered as a geospatial database. Depending on sensor resolution, accuracy levels for systematically laid plantations like orchards and oil palm can reach over 90% accuracy. How does this help? 👉Accurate location and estimation of the number of trees, 👉No human-in-the-loop ensures faster processing, 👉The database makes up the baseline for any future individual tree-level health monitoring, 👉Can be overlaid with wide-ranging satellite sensor-derived images viz., Multispectral, Hyperspectral or SAR to extract tree-wise unique parameters for disease and deficiency detection at an early stage, 👉Periodic monitoring can be set up to locate unhealthy trees or areas across vast plantations to reduce ground effort significantly, 👉Deforestation and tree harvesting (legal or illegal) in remote forest areas can be easily detected, 👉Compared to any ground visits or use of drones, automated information feeds derived from satellite data reduce turnaround time significantly.
