I gave some views on what needed to be done to enable cross border renewable energy projects to take off. Extracts from the article below: "The big challenges interconnected renewable energy projects in the region face are high initial capital expenditure to build out solar panels for power generation, batteries to help balance the base load of the power grid, and cables to bring the power across borders. Companies putting in the resources to build out those projects would need to recover their costs, said Puah." "Reducing as much of the uncertainty and risk will be key in getting more interconnected renewable energy projects off the ground." “"The interest among the investments and business community to pour in more money in terms of strengthening energy investments, including renewable energy and even financing the connectivity, is also quite clear,” said Puah. The key is to think long term for such investments into renewables interconnectivity projects, and Singapore wants to promote more investments into the segment. But the only way to facilitate this is to improve connectivity, which will attract more development of capacity in the power sector. “What is needed is for countries to agree, and let’s find a way to really facilitate this,” he noted." At #SIEW2024 panel discussions, I spoke about cross-border electricity trade and connectivity emerging as a key driver for our region's energy transition. We must work with like-minded partners to strengthen the interlinkages between clean energy and cross-border power trading and move from planning to execution. Singapore recently increased its electricity imports target to around 6 gigawatts by 2035. Additional imports will be required beyond this timeline to meet our rising energy demand. EMA has given Conditional Approval for Sun Cable's project to import 1.75 GW of electricity from Australia to Singapore after 2035. As we navigate the energy transition, we're also empowering businesses to do their part. EMA, ERI@N and Enterprise Singapore have developed a playbook to guide Singapore businesses on reducing carbon emissions arising from electricity usage. We hope this resource provides actionable strategies for businesses to help meet our net-zero goal. #SIEW2024 Energy Market Authority (EMA)

Thoroughly enjoyed my first Singapore International Energy Week 2024 with the vibrant and insightful perspectives and discussions. It has been a very busy and also engaging and fruitful week. We welcomed more than 18,000 delegates comprising over 600 ministers, senior government officials and industry leaders from over 70 countries. Truly an international event that we are honoured to host. Several announcements will shape our energy decarbonisation path ahead: the launch of the International Energy Agency Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore, Conditional Approval for electricity imports from Australia, and initiatives to enhance the reliability of our future power grid. We also celebrated the achievements of our industry partners this week. This includes the launch of Singapore's second LNG terminal project by SLNG - Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd and the groundbreaking ceremony of YTL PowerSeraya's 600MW hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine. These milestones highlight the industry's collective progress and commitment towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, speakers, exhibitors, and attendees from around the globe for their presence and support. Also, none of this would have been possible without our incredible EMA team. I saw firsthand their hard work, long hours and dedication behind the scenes to make #SIEW2024 a resounding success. I look forward to more exciting times ahead as we work together for a clean energy future! Photos by Energy Market Authority (EMA) and YTL PowerSeraya Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW)

Our Chief Executive Kok Keong Puah spoke to The Straits Times and The Business Times about the role of electricity imports in our energy transition. Singapore has granted Conditional Approvals and Conditional Licences for electricity imports from Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Australia. If realised, these projects will collectively tap on a diverse mix of renewable power sources. With our goal of around 6 GW of low-carbon electricity imports by 2035, we will need to upgrade and expand our current energy grid infrastructure. Clean energy

At the #SIEW2024 TechTable discussions, I emphasised the important relationships between technology and the clean energy transition, focusing on attracting investments to spur green growth sectors and improving regional interconnectivity. Businesses can do their part to reduce carbon emissions. My EMA colleagues have worked with Energy Research Institute @ NTU and Enterprise Singapore on a playbook for businesses to adopt practical strategies for optimising energy efficiency and lowering emissions from electricity usage. I also had the pleasure of opening the Joint Year of Sustainability panel discussion hosted by the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore (FCCS). Singapore and France share strong bilateral ties in energy, research and innovation. With the opening of the International Energy Agency Regional Cooperation Centre here in Singapore, there will be new opportunities for France and Singapore to bring our collaboration in the clean energy transition to the regional level, across Southeast Asia and beyond. I'm inspired by the conversations, collaborations and partnerships at #SIEW2024 this week. Everyone can play a part in contributing to a connected and sustainable energy world. It's been an electrifying experience, and I'm impressed by the dedication of my colleagues who made this international event possible. Their efforts have truly paid off, creating a platform for crucial discussions on our region’s energy future. Energy Market Authority (EMA)

Honoured to contribute to two engaging panel discussions at my first #SIEW2024, focusing on advancing Asia's energy transition. In the first panel, we explored how to accelerate investment in renewables. Governments, like Singapore, need to be able to address novelty and commercial risk. EMA is supporting innovative energy storage solutions with new features at the Sembcorp facility. We are likewise supporting an ammonia pathfinder project to establish supply chain and deployment requirements. At the Leader's Dialogue, I shared about charting Singapore's energy transition and the challenge of balancing the energy trilemma of energy security, sustainability, and cost-competitiveness. One such example is keeping all technology pathways open while understanding deployment, cost and reliability issues. Of course, the energy trilemma can be better addressed by tapping on more varied renewable sources through an ASEAN power grid. Also had to chance to host a networking lunch with students aspiring to make energy their careers. With the participation of industry professionals, we hope to help them make sense of the opportunities out there. #SIEW #SIEW2024 Energy Market Authority (EMA) Thorbjörn Fors Elakeyaa Selvaraji Ragna Schmidt-Haupt Priyanka Mehrotra Dharma Djojonegoro Rim Azirar Tuan Chung
