EuroCham Singapore is organising a webinar on "UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution: Impact and Key Policy Considerations," which will be held on 22 October (Tuesday) from 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm (SGT) on Zoom. *Sign up now at https://buff.ly/3Ydvved Plastic pollution is one of the most urgent environmental crises today. Each year, approximately 350 million tons of plastic waste are generated globally, with only about 9% of plastic waste being recycled. It causes major harm to wildlife and ecosystems, disrupts the livelihood of millions of people, poses significant risks to human health and puts an enormous economic burden on governments and businesses. On March 2, 2022, 175 countries at the United Nations Environmental Assembly adopted a historic resolution to create the world’s first-ever legally binding treaty for plastic pollution by the end of 2024. There have been four rounds of negotiations to forge the ‘Paris Agreement for plastic’, with the final round scheduled from 25 November to 1 December 2024 in Busan, Republic of Korea. Depending on negotiations, the treaty could promote the sustainable production and consumption of plastics, enhance recycling and waste management, and foster innovation in alternative materials and technologies. Key topics include: - Impact of Plastic Pollution: An overview of how plastic waste affects ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health, with case studies highlighting the urgency of the issue. - Objectives of the legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution: A discussion on the progress of negotiations thus far, and its potential for reducing plastic pollution, promoting circular economy practices, and encouraging international cooperation. - Business Opportunities: Exploration of how companies can benefit from the treaty through innovation in sustainable materials, investment in recycling infrastructure, and partnerships with governments and NGOs. - Case Studies and Best Practices: Presentations from organisations leading the way in sustainable plastic management, showcasing successful initiatives and strategies. Join us for this engaging dialogue with experts from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and industry leaders on the potential significance of the Treaty and the challenges and opportunities it presents: - Mr Carsten Wachholz (Ellen MacArthur Foundation | Business Coalition at Global Plastics Treaty) - Ms Anthea Ow (the LEGO Group) - Mr Lloyd Lowe (BASF South East Asia) - Ms Marieke Nispeling (FrieslandCampina) *Registration is subject to the host's approval. #TeamEurope #EuroChamSG #PlasticPollution #CircularEconomy Nele Cornelis Shelly De Groote Christine Jeremiah Mai Josephine Tanya Sahni Vanessa Sipple-Asher Eva Vincetic
