🌍 Exploring the future of carbon trading, blue carbon projects and nature-based solutions 🌍   The Nature Conservancy Chief Scientist, Professor Katharine Hayhoe, and our Climate Partnerships Director in the Asia Pacific region, Allison Bleaney-Lewin, recently had the privilege of speaking at the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions, Singapore.   Professor Hayhoe delivered the keynote address, describing the climate and biodiversity challenges ahead of us, the solutions we’re working on, and the importance of talking about climate change.   “If you don’t talk about it, why would you care? I had the distinct honour of accompanying His Excellency, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on a site visit to Ha'atafu on Tongatapu in the Kingdom of Tonga with Hon. Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu (Minister of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications). This area was among the hardest hit by the devastating Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano eruption and tsunami in 2022. During our visit, the Secretary-General had the opportunity to meet with local communities, hear their stories, and witness the profound impacts of climate change. The conversations were deeply moving as we listened to accounts of the psychological trauma inflicted by the disaster—the haunting sounds of the tsunami, the destruction of homes, and the loss of locally-owned resorts that were once a source of pride and livelihood. A recent collaborative and community-led mangrove planting effort at the affected site stood out as a beacon of resilience. This initiative aims to build up natural defences against future climate impacts, showcasing the proactive steps the Tongan people are taking to safeguard their future. In his reflections, the Secretary-General described the Tongan people as incredibly resilient, a testament to their strength in adversity. He also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that support from the United Nations would reach Tonga's shores, helping to rebuild and restore hope for a brighter future. This visit underscored the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing the escalating impacts of climate change, particularly for vulnerable communities like those in Tonga. I am humbled to be part of these efforts and to stand alongside the resilient people of Tonga as they rebuild and recover. It was a pleasure to give a lecture last night at the National University of Singapore to the Msc Biodiversity Conservation and Nature-based Climate Solutions cohort! I shared a bit on GAIT’s journey and deep dived into some of our carbon projects on the ground, including our Indonesia pilot 51,000 ha tropical forestry ARR project in Central Kalimantan and NBS partnership with Government of Tonga. I really wanted to emphasise the importance of all of the non-carbon attributes when developing a carbon project like community engagement and empowerment, indigenous leadership, biodiversity etc. and was also glad that the students had super complex questions that showed the deepness of their understanding of the space. I am glad that there are courses like this to help nurture the local climate talent here in Singapore and look forward to the next lecture! Thanks for inviting me Román Carrasco 🙏🏽

It was great to get a chance to have a round table on the sidelines of COP28 UAE with Selwin Hart, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Climate Action and Just Transition, on challenges and opportunities in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Latin America. SIDS account for less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet have the highest percentage (by far) of high-risk climate communities and regions. SIDS is already an underrepresented group, and the Pacific even more so, with very little representation in key decision-making roles within the UN and other multilateral organisations. Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft’s 2021 World Risk Index (https://lnkd.in/gVy2wnsc) placed Tonga as the 3rd most at risk nation, and Pacific countries and other SIDS dominate the highly at risk. #COP28 has far exceeded previous years regarding #climatefinancing with the UAE committing USD 30B to Alterra fund, #GCF pledges growing USD 12.5B +, and other pledges continually being made. My only hope is that the above funds are #accessible and can be deployed and utilised by those most at need today, and not tomorrow. We demand that our dialogue allows SIDS youth, and other underrepresented groups to have a mandated voice and seat at the table in key-decision making forums, bodies and roles!
