The newly opened Bidadari Park in Singapore features the first-of-its-kind Alkaff Lake, a biodiversity-friendly retention pond engineered by PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency, designed to prevent flash floods in the densely developed Bidadari estate. As the lowest point in the estate, Alkaff Lake will collect rainwater runoff from half of the Bidadari estate, with its banks and footpaths designed to be floodable, giving it the ability to hold up to 40,000 cubic meters of stormwater. Highlighting Bidadari features and the park’s core habitat, the woodland, Dr Ding Li Yong, Asia’s Regional Flyway Coordinator for Non-Governmental Organisation BirdLife International, shared that “Bidadari’s greenery and higher terrain serve as a landing point for these migratory birds to rest and refuel” and that “A patch of woodland has been retained, primarily to benefit these migratory birds.” The park further features a 1.7 km-long outlet drain and integrates natural elements, such as a preserved rain tree at the centre of the lake. Visitors can explore scenic trails, relax in birdwatching pods, and more, with future enhancements like a memorial garden and a Heritage Walk set to further enrich the park. The new Jurong Town Hall Park Connector will introduce an additional 2km of green trails to the Clementi Nature Corridor, linking Jurong Lake Gardens with the Rail Corridor. The park connector is part of a larger 18km ecological corridor between Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Southern Ridges, expanding the total publicly accessible green network to 11km. As Minister for National Development Desmond Lee shared, “This corridor will provide Singaporeans with greater recreational opportunities while enabling them to connect with nature.” He further added that, “The Clementi Nature Corridor – one of the ecological corridors conceptualised under NParks’ islandwide Ecological Profiling Exercise (EPE) – will also strengthen ecological connectivity for wildlife between Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Southern Ridges.” Another project in the works is the Old Jurong Line Nature Trail, which is set to begin development in early 2025 and aims to preserve sections of the former Jurong Railway Line. To ensure the project is environmentally sensitive and safe, the National Parks Board is working closely with nature groups and has been conducting Environmental Impact Assessments over the past year. Singapore is intensifying its efforts to transition to clean energy by exploring geothermal power as a potential path to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has been studying international geothermal projects, including one in Germany by Canadian start-up Eavor Technologies Inc., to gain insights into advanced geothermal technologies and their challenges. Eavor uses an underground closed-loop system of pipes that transport water, which absorbs natural heat that is then used to generate electricity at an industrial scale at the surface. The plant in Germany is expected to be operational by 2026 and will be capable of producing over 8MW of electricity. This output is equivalent to about 0.1 per cent of Singapore’s peak electricity demand in 2023. Following findings that temperatures close to the Sembawang hot spring could have temperatures of up to 200 deg C – the temperatures needed for power generation – at depths of 4km to 5km, Singapore is conducting a two-year study to assess its geothermal potential. If successful, geothermal energy could contribute a small portion of Singapore’s electricity needs and support carbon capture and storage efforts, helping the nation move towards its environmental goals. The Plastic Odyssey , a research vessel on a three-year mission to combat ocean plastic pollution, has arrived in Singapore. Operated by a French non-governmental organisation (NGO), the vessel travels globally to promote sustainable practices and identify cost-effective plastic recycling solutions. With its strategic location and strong shipping industry, Singapore could serve as a key logistical hub for recycling solutions, supporting plastic waste transformation projects across Asia. The Embassy of France in Singapore shared that, “This project explores innovative solutions to reduce our impact on the environment and promotes a more sustainable use of resources. Advancing towards a less polluted world and creating the conditions for protecting the oceans is one of the key shared objectives of France and Singapore.” The NGO combats plastic pollution by supporting recycling entrepreneurs and establishing small-scale recycling factories that transform plastic waste into practical materials and products like roof tiles and paving blocks. They also raise global awareness and equip communities with the knowledge and resources to reduce plastic consumption through educational programmes and initiatives. Singaporean firms are exploring opportunities in Ghana to source carbon credits, prompted by the rise in carbon taxes that took effect in 2024. By purchasing these credits, these companies can reduce their carbon footprint and lower their carbon tax liabilities. In line with Singapore's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, carbon tax-liable companies can only purchase government-approved, high-quality credits that meet rigorous standards. Ms Molly Brown of Carbon Strategy from Kenya-based company BURN, shared, “We’re exploring opportunities with this Ghana-Singapore bilateral deal, which would allow projects approved by both governments to sell credits to Singapore companies to offset their carbon tax.” BURN hopes to issue credits to Singapore from early 2025. A delegation of 22 firms, led by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore), recently visited Ghana to explore carbon credit projects, including initiatives focused on cookstove projects and the green mobility solution sector, such as electric vehicles. Additionally, Singapore is in discussions with other countries, such as Vietnam and Bhutan, to expand carbon credit sourcing opportunities. Singapore and Japan have signed an agreement to deepen collaboration on carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, a key climate solution that involves capturing and securely storing carbon dioxide from polluting sources. This partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise and expedite the adoption of CCS across the region, addressing the challenge posed by limited local storage capacity for captured carbon emissions. Ms Stephanie Chiang, a Senior Research Analyst for carbon capture, utilisation and storage at energy market research and consultancy Wood Mackenzie, noted that Japan has an advantage in CO2 capture technology, and added that “Japan’s technological expertise and learnings from developing these large-scale CCS hubs will benefit Singapore in its goal of storing 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 a year from 2030 in geological formations overseas”. This international collaboration is poised to play a vital role in helping both nations meet their decarbonisation targets while ensuring high standards for CO2 storage. In addition to this agreement, Singapore is actively pursuing a cross-border CCS project with Indonesia and exploring CO2 storage solutions with ExxonMobil and Shell. Researchers at Republic Polytechnic have developed a solution to reduce food waste by repurposing okara, the soya pulp byproduct from soya milk and tofu production, into a crop yield and quality booster known as okara biostimulant concentrate (OBC). Singapore generates around 30 tonnes of okara daily, much of which is typically discarded due to its indigestible fibre. Mauro Catellani, Chief Executive of SoiLabs, a local food technology company licensing the intellectual property rights of this technology shared, “This (technology) allows us to solve the waste disposal problem for soya producers by converting it into an intermediate product that can initially be transformed into a food product, but also into numerous high-value-added products.” OBC has been successfully tested across multiple farms, with the biostimulant having shown the potential to increase crop yields by 15% to 50% and significantly enhance plant growth. For instance, it shortened the growth cycle of leafy greens from 30 days to just 25 days, enabling more rounds of cultivation. Additionally, strawberries treated with OBC experienced a reduction in powdery mildew, a common fungal disease. With these outcomes, plans are now underway to market OBC globally.
