Forbes 30 under 30 l We Create Low-Carbon Computer Code

Absolute delight to have shared about Greenie Web, the Global Youth Alliance for Digital Sustainability, low-carbon computer coding and what it means to youth at this year’s HINEW Hangzhou International Innovation Conference! The desire for ESG innovation in China is certainly on the rise and it was an honour to raise awareness on the carbon footprint of the digital world in Hangzhou, hometown of Alibaba Group, one of the most tech savvy and digitally connected places on the globe. Look forward to continuing the conversation on low-carbon computer code, also known as “低碳代码” in Chinese, to more and more people. #GreenieWeb #DigitalSustainability #LowCarbonComputerCoding

That wraps up the trip by our founder, Ian C., to Jakarta! It was very meaningful trip that forged new connections while strengthening existing bonds.

Had an incredible trip to Jakarta over the past week. Caught up with fellow Zhejiang University alumni, including William Ong who currently leads Green Power Group which was listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX: LABA), where we had an animated discussion on the future of sustainbility and ESG in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. Also visited the Ashoka Foundation’s Jakarta office where we had a fruitful discussion on collaboration in capacity building programs and possible joint initiatives. Special thanks to Anni from Universitas Prof. Dr. Moestopo for the invitation to speak about digital sustainability to undergraduate students. Loved the post-session engagement and the thoughtful questions posed by the audience. Last but deinfitely not least, it was amazing to meetup with Arinda Shabrina and Rabby - both of whom were formerly also with Greenie Web. As a cliamtech focused on the digital world, the company had been digital-first since day 1 and it certainly felt different to have the warm, in-person connection. #GreenieWeb #DigitalSustainability

Our founder, Ian C. , was honoured with the opportunity to share with the Indonesian public about #digital #sustainability and Greenie Web on live TV! Special thanks to Radio Republik Indonesia for the special invitation!

First time on live TV! It was an absolute pleasure to be on Radio Republik Indonesia’s Voice of Indonesia broadcast where I shared about digital sustainability and its importance for the 21st century. Special thanks to the interviewer Pane and to Ani Hasanah Mubarok for the kind invitation to the Jakarta headquarters for the special session. As the oldest broadcast platform in Indonesia and one with the largest reach - many folks in the archipelago of 17,000 islands regularly rely on radio broadcast for information, it was a delight to potentially reach out to 275 million Indonesians through the interview. With COP29 Azerbaijan coming up, I hope that this will raise awareness amongst government, corporates and individuals in Southeast Asia’s largest economy on the importance of low-carbon computer code. #GreenieWeb #29by29 #GlobalAllianceforDigitalSustainability #Indonesia #RRI #LiveTV #ESG #COP29

Digital carbon emissions from online activities—from sending a WhatsApp message to using ChatGPT—are becoming a “massive present-day issue”. In his presentation at The AI Summit last week, Greenie Web CEO Ian C. highlighted that they contributed 3.7 per cent of Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, almost as much as the aviation industry 🤯 #TheAISummit #ATxEnterprise #climatechange

Last month, I had the pleasure of being selected to represent Singapore as Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academy Fellow. Organized by Fulbright University Vietnam and backed by the U.S. Department of State, the program's focus on GreenTech was not just timely but extremely relevant given the current climate crisis. It was a wonderful week in Ho Chi Minh City, exchanging ideas and networking with representatives from all 10 ASEAN member nations and Timor Leste, including my incredible buddies: Dolly Cardano Manic, Teoh ZhiXuan, Nelson M. S. Amaral (he/him), Apithep Piyaphiphathanamongkol and Tirza Listiarani One key highlight was the panel discussion on ClimateTech VC funding and startup ecosytem of Southeast Asia by Thao Tran (New Energy Nexus, Tien Nguyen (Earth Venture Capital), Tuan-Anh Tran, PhD,. , Speaking of entrepreneurs and non-profits doing incredible work in their field Krishia Pauline Ellis (Salin PH), Chor Chee Hoe (Qarbotech), Do Nhat Tran (The Ocean Cleanup) was also deeply inspiring. Many thanks to all the other experts who had made the pre-program and the on-site program a memorable one as well: Thanh Thao NGUYEN, Khun Kyaw Zayar Win, Craig Jamieson, Dr. Phan Hoang Lan, Prof Nguyen Thi Trang, Vuong X. Hung Kelvin (Climate Fund Managers (CFM). Last but not least, a shoutout to the YSEALI organizing committee: Viet Dung NGUYEN, Vladimir Mariano, Willem Smit, To Thi My Nu and Nguyen Le Ngoc Thao Quyen for the incredible hospitality and well-curated program. As I look back at the program, I am grateful to be the sole representative for Singapore for this program and look forward to being part of the YSEALI alumni community and meeting with Ian Yip as well as fellow Singapore-based alumni on 5 September!

Forbes 30 under 30 l We Create Low-Carbon Computer Code

My absolute delight to share that Greenie Web and myself have been featured on Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Asia! When I first woke up on Thursday to this news, I was shocked and incredibly humbled. Compared with many of our predecessors, Mark Zuckerburg(2012) and Zhang Yi Ming - founder of ByteDance (2013), what I have done with Greenie Web so far pales in comparison. However, it is with immense encouragement that I will continue to push forward. Gratitude is very important - and I want to take this chance to thank everyone who has been involved with Greenie Web thus far. First and foremost, I thank God for sustaining me even through my lowest moments of entrepreneurship. At moments like this, it is very easy to think that entrepreneurship is about the highs, the wins, the awards and the honour. It is not. There have been plenty of lows - plenty of them. There is a popular idiom in the Chinese language that says 10 seconds of fame on stage requires 10 years of hard work. This could not be truer in entrepreneurship where the lows are definitely the lowest of the lows. So I thank God that through daily prayer and devotion, I have managed to maintain proper mental health and have derived strength to bounce back from failure, time and again. Second, my thanks goes to my parents for their unwavering support, whatever unorthodox decision I may make. My parents don't use LinkedIn often, if at all, and probably will not read this unless I intentionally send them a screenshot. But nonetheless, I want to give them a big shoutout! When I last physically saw my parents last month, I realized how much they have aged. The few strands of grey hair have made way to innumerable strands of white, and the once fine freckles have grown deeper. In startups, we talk a lot about how there is no time. We must act now. But this season made me realize that is also true for the time that we spend with our family. Treasure the time you have with family. Third, mentorship has been in vogue in the last few years. But to me, it is more than a trend and I have met many mentors who have selflessly dedicated their expertise, advice and network. Thank you Vinod V. Mahboobani 馬偉樂, Joshua Au, Faris Ridzuan, Glenn Seah, Suthida Chang, Shirley Wong, Zohair Ahmed, Douglas Peris, Michael Yiin, Shiladitya Ghosh, Hong Xiang. Last but not least - those who labour tirelessly in a startup, the core members, the friends who chip in, the interns and more. Thank you. No man is an island and no startup can function with just one founder. As a sole founder, I am deeply aware of my limitations and I am grateful for each and every individual who has contributed along the way. Greenie Web would not be the same without all of your efforts. Having been on LinkedIn hiatus for a long time, it is wonderful coming home to this site with many words of encouragement and congratulations. Stay tuned for exciting updates! #DigitalSustainability #GreenICT #GreenieWeb

Our founder, Ian C., was recently featured in The Star Malaysia. Check out his piece on how micro, small and medium enterprises can also be part of the Digital Sustainability movement.

#LowCarbonWebsites Thank you The Star (Star Media Group Berhad) for featuring myself and Greenie Web during this month’s ESG special edition. This perspective piece on digital sustainability for MSMEs is particularly special because The Star was also the very first newspaper that picked up on what Greenie Web was doing almost a year ago! To me, writing this thought piece felt very much like a warm homecoming. In between the previous feature and now, much has changed in the ESG world. However - and very unfortunately - digital sustainability (i.e. low-carbon coding, sustainable UI/UX) has still not entered the mainstream sustainability conversations. The lack of expertise in ESG (let alone digital sustainability) and the high costs of implementation are often cited during my conversation with prospective partners. For Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), this is further compounded by uncertain macroeconomic headwinds heading into 2024 and a larger number of ESG talent already locked in by large corporates. The piece speaks directly towards this dilemma faced by many MSMEs who wish to go green but can't quite find where or how to start. Just like the two examples listed, starting in digital sustainability can often of high impact and low cost (both financially and manpower-wise). In some ways digital sustainability and MSMEs are analogous. Both are not the "go-to-priority" when it comes to their respective fields. However, when taken collectively, MSMEs - which form the backbone of most economies - can exert an outsized impact in on the ESG goals of any city or country. Similarly, digital sustainability, when applied across websites, mobile applications, IOT, software and more can also amplify carbon reductions. Special thanks to Zhi En Chow for the opportunity and for re-uniting on this issue. It was an absolute pleasure to share my thoughts on this emerging topic which holds outsized impact and importance for the future of sustainability!
