Few things caught my eye in Malaysia's #Budget2025 and I'm pretty excited about the potential #opportunities for us Singaporean business owners. 1. 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀💥 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗿-𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝗝𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗭): The Government has approved Forest City as a duty-free Island to promote tourism and stimulate local #economic activities. It also aims to boost both economies by simplifying cross-border business and travel. This includes easier movement of people and goods, with the RTS Link facilitating smoother commutes. The goal is to leverage the strong Singapore-Malaysia trade partnership for increased investment and economic growth. 2. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 🤑 Not only Malaysia's making it easier to set up a business there, the new incentive framework is designed to attract high-value investments in key sectors like technology, innovation, and renewable energy. Expect to see attractive tax breaks, #grants, and other financial incentives. 3. 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿-𝗨𝗽 💪 Skills Development: Similar to SkillsFuture credits, Malaysian companies are getting government support to upskill their employees through HRD Corp programs. This further strengthens the #talent pool available to Singaporean businesses. What else am I missing? 🤔Let me know in the comments! #mkk fest 2024: When Eric Siew and I met for the 1st time back in Nov 2023, I was expecting the same humour that Eric wrote which I followed religiously on #linkedin. Our conversation that day was more like meeting a long-lost friend who has so much experience to share. I was happy to see a Doctor for the 1st time in my life and I guess he was equally intrigued to find out why he has gained a followings across the causeway. I've since made a few more connections which I can yumcha when I can. When he asked Grof to join in MKK II and MKK Fest, they were like a dailou asking, "are you going to die for me?" type of questions. Eric is building a community of like-minded individuals to come together, have a good laugh, find friendship and solutions to all challenges in life (ok, I exaggerate but you got that point). This Saturday, the #choobub and Ark Plus will come together to present MKK Fest. Eric has increased the capacity to 150 (the maximum he can handle). There are only 6 slots left. There are a lot of amazing speakers that have been lined up. I'm looking forward to listening all the war stories and learning from Choo Ann NGOH Andros Lim Prema Mehrotra Tanti Didi Z. Dr Adam Lim (PhD, CFP) Kanji Low Dr Azhar Ahmad 🩺 Beth Teo Sharon Tan Jermaine Li Yuen I'll see you there. Yes?

Recently had a call with an Employment Pass holder on his company's affairs. As part of our discovery call, I asked if she was aware that his company ought to pay for his SDL. “No, I thought SDL and CPF are only for locals. I was not informed about this by my corp secretary.” A bit of background: SDL (Skills Development Levy) is a levy paid by companies for ALL local and foreigner employees. The levies collected goes to the Skills Development Fund (SDF) and administered by Skillsfuture Singapore (SSG). The purpose of the funds is to support the up-skilling of the workforce via subsidised training programs. The levy is currently set at 0.25% of monthly remuneration (capped af $11.25/ employee/ month). There are 2 methods of payments: via the Central Providence Fund Board (CPFB) or the GoBusiness Dashboard (for those companies with only foreign employees). What’s the penalty for non-compliance? 10% penalty on the outstanding amount annually!!! Self-employed business owners, be a smart and informed owner so you are not caught for not paying the SDL! Ask Me Lah: Is a series of short FAQs about entrepreneurship and businesses that I encountered in my interaction with friends. The names and facts have been sanitised for personal data protection purposes. If you like to read this, pls give a like. If you have any burning questions, feel free to let me know. I’ll try my best to answer them.

How to build a tech team without having a #tech background? I firmly believe that nothing is impossible as long as you set your mind to it. When we started Grof, we wanted to build a product that could address all our past frustrations with corporate secretarial providers. What better way to solve the problem than to create a product dedicated to addressing those issues? But first, we needed a #team. We needed people who could understand and empathize with our clients' situations, put themselves in their shoes, and come up with concrete solutions—all while working on the aesthetics, functionality and technicalities of building a #scalable tech product. Here's how I "brainwashed" them: 🤖 Hold regular 𝗵𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘀. These are crucial for shaping their skills and furthering their learning. Inspired by Design Sprints, #hackathons are our rituals to get everyone on the same page. Grof has served >2300 SME customers and our front-line services team has a reasonable insights of our customers’ problems: how can we share this effectively to our design and engineering colleagues? 🫂 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲. Ha! I'm known in the team for constantly saying it's better to overcommunicate than undercommunicate. This ensures everyone is on the same page and #aligned with the product direction. Daphne Chin sets up a rigorous program of pre-work, including researching on similar solutions out there. At the hackathon itself, we first went through the problem statements and a sharing by Jackson Lim of the problems that our customers are facing. Then we go through a series of Crazy 8 to quickly brainstorm and sharing of solution. 🤝🏼 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲. Our engineers and designers proceed to build a simple prototype over a short 1.5 days in order to demonstrate key ideas that we have selected. This brings to life what we have learnt in the short hackathon and creates more alignment amongst the team on how the solutions should work. While we try to test the prototypes with both internal and external users, we found it challenging to align schedules and do the testing over an extended period post-hackathon. I rely heavily on my team to deliver, and I'm incredibly fortunate to have created a team of such great and smart people. Our roles as leaders is to communicate clearly the intent and work to align the team with the same understanding. 👉🏼 If you're invested, follow me along in building a high-performing tech team! #growthwithgrof #singaporebusinessowners #grofsg #teambuilding [Photo taken from 2 years apart]

🚀 We’re always striving to enhance our services and app features at Grof. This week was no exception. We held our first operations #workshop at our main office in Singapore, where teams underwent training to optimise processes and boost efficiency. Meanwhile, our engineering team tackled key pain points, streamlined workflows, and planned for exciting feature developments during our Annual Hackathon. It’s been an intense but incredibly productive week, and it’s always great to catch up with our Indonesia and Malaysia teams as we come together. We’re one step closer to delivering even greater value to our users! 🎉 #growthwithgrof #grofcorporateservices #collaboration #teamwork

Ever thought of importing goods into Singapore? Check out Jackson Lim's latest post for more insights! Follow him along for more burning tax questions! 🔥

Ask Me Lah: Taxes when importing goods into Singapore If you are looking to test your products with local consumers, you obviously will be concerned about the overall cost of importing them in. The good news is that generally, there are NO import or excise duties to be paid. The only exception being intoxicating liquors, tobacco products, motor vehicles and petrol/ biodiesel products (now you can guess why alcohol, cigarettes, driving is so expensive in Singapore!) However, do note that Goods and Services Tax (GST) at the current rate of 9% is still applicable for your import. So if you are looking to bring in some clothes, toys, foodstuff or health supplements, rest assured besides GST, there are no other duties involved. However, for foodstuff or health supplements, you may still need to check with the relevant authorities like the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) or Health Sciences Authority (HSA) if there are specific regulations regarding their import and sale in Singapore.
