With Russia locked in #sanctions and maritime trade disrupted at chokepoints, pressure to secure #supplychains is fueling the re-emergence of an ancient trade route that cuts through #CentralAsia. From an efficiency perspective, the #MiddleCorridor is half the length of the Trans-Siberian Railway. The corridor can be traversed in about 12 days, compared with 19 for the Russian route, while shipping from Shanghai to Rotterdam can take 20-30 days. 2. The risks and costs of transiting through Russia and Belarus have increased significantly as a result of the Kremlin's war on Ukraine. Traffic along the corridor is booming, albeit a shaky start. Volume declined from 1.3 million metric tons in 2017 to 586,000 tons in 2021 before growing rapidly to about 1.5 million tons in 2022; 2.8 million tons in 2023; and is on course to exceed 3.2 million tons in 2024. 4. But the corridor hasn’t taken off as quickly as its vaunted potential suggests. It has long suffered from substantial logistical challenges both man-made and natural: the need to cross the #CaspianSea, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of system interoperability. 5. China has a strong interest in the Middle Corridor for many reasons, one being it could strengthen Beijing's hand in its relationship with Moscow. Over the past five years, China has invested billions in and deepened ties with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. 6. The EU, meanwhile, has poured EUR10 billion into the corridor as part of its Global Gateway project in a bid to enlarge the bloc's access to resource-rich Central Asian countries and to help these countries diversify their trade patterns away from Russia and China. 7. All these are happening without the US' direct involvement. In the absence of an overt American presence, trade flows along the Middle Corridor provide a glimpse into what the world will look like as we continue to move into a multipolar world.
