Our biorefinery transforms insects into high-value biomaterials for a circular economy

About us

Insectta is Singapore's first ento-powered biotech company. Our patented extraction technology produces high-value biomaterials for the pharmaceutical, organic electronics, personal wellness industries, and more. At the forefront of our solutions is sustainably-produced chitosan and melanin, with better functionality and yield than ever before. We're improving accessibility to these high-quality ingredients for manufacturers looking to optimise both performance and circularity. Founded in 2018, Insectta has grown from Singapore's very first insect company, to the world's first chemical manufacturer specialising in ento-biomaterials. We've raised $2.4M in funding, that has allowed us to bring our technology to scale and our biomaterials to the world. The future of circular biomaterials is looking fly - join us as we revolutionise the landscape of our healthcare and electronics

Amazing debut experience for Insectta at Society of Cosmetic Scientists (Singapore)'s Suppliers Day Exhibition! 🎉 Jun Wei Phua and I showcased our novel eumelanin and chitosan for skin and haircare applications to much excitement from the cosmetic and cosmeceutical industry. Yup - as a cofounder, I know what everyone's thinking, so let me just address the elephant in the room with three takeaways from the day: 1. The cosmetics industry is hungry for innovative ingredients offering both form and function. We backed up our biomaterial's claims with peer-reviewed scientific data tested specifically on our novel ingredients. 📈 2. The art and science of branding *really* matters in this industry. The traditional way of branding insect products really isn't going to "fly" here. We know that and take it fully in our stride. 💎 3. #Innovation goes both ways. The promise new biomaterials hold can't be fulfilled without industry adopters bringing them to consumers. It's a win-win effort for both innovator and adopters 🤝 Big thanks to the SCSS team, Ming Jie Tan for the invite and all that stopped by. Here's to a new range of circular bioingredients taking flight! ____ #cosmetics #cosmeceuticals #biotechnology #sustainability #circulareconomy #greenmanufacturing #biomedicine #singapore

This week marks a big milestone - we completed the 10th full run of our chitosan and melanin extraction process in our pilot facility! 🎉 — But wait, 10? That's it? What's there to celebrate? Well, lots! Because behind those 10 successful batches were many, MANY more precious learning runs that every biotech engineer knows goes into scaling lab-sized processes into industrial ones. Thanks to all those "failed" runs, we managed to unlock: ✅ Cost Optimisations (some were totally unexpected - cool!) ✅ Our unique set of industrial SOPs ✅ Another tier of trade secrets 🤭 Going from lab to pilot isn't a walk in the park, but if we've achieved all this at just 10 runs, I can't wait to see what 100 brings us! Kilograms of chitosan produced in our #Singapore pilot facility ready to head out to customers who are swapping synthetics in their formulations for a cleaner alternative. 💪 Our product development team went above and beyond until we were sure our chitosan: 1. Met, no, EXCEEDED quality and safety specifications of what you'll find on the market 2. Was scalable, and 3. Doesn't come with a sustainability premium. A big thank you to those who are on this journey with us - and a big welcome to those about to join us. 😁 Insectta's all about increasing functionality, introducing sustainability, and cutting out green premiums. ✨ What an amazing week at Insects to Feed the World. The largest gathering of the greatest minds and innovators in this amazing industry. No matter how deep you think you're in it, the industry always gives you something new to learn wherever you turn. Here are my top three takeaways from the past 5 days: 🐛 1. There's no industry without consumers. Regardless of whether we're in research, commercialisation, or communication, our goal should point towards increasing consumer adoption of insect products. It's a work in progress for the industry, and we should champion marketers, artists, and branding experts to join us. Insectta is working hard on this! 🦗 2. Singapore's slated to be one of Asia's top innovation hubs for the insect industry. With the Singapore Food Agency passing the regulatory framework for the import and rearing of edible insects at the end of the quarter, the insect industry is set to benefit from a huge regulatory and PR boost. 🪲 3. Specialisation - and collaboration! - is here to save our supply chain. Just as with other industries, it's heartening to see ours mature to a point where specialists are focusing on optimising crucial points of our supply chain. From genetics, rearing systems, breeding, to value-adding downstream applications, when specialists come together to conquer challenges, that's where we'll be seeing magic happen. Well, that's my take on it! I'd love to hear yours - comment below with your favourite takeaway (and photo) from IFW2024! Soldier on! 💪

Do we think the future of insect farming in #biomaterials? The short answer - a resounding YES. 🔬🐛 In industry, biomaterials are commonly referred to as something engineered to work for or with biological systems. In the world of #insectfarming today, many of us are striving towards optimising insects for use in feed, food, or like in the case of Insectta, high value materials that can serve our pharmaceuticals, personal wellness, and even organic electronics. That engineering mindset, the finesse of tweaking a process or formulation to maximise the impact insects have on our bodies, livestock, or manufacturing industries is why we say the future of insect farming is definitely biomaterials. We'd like to thank The Business Times for the feature, and also give a big shoutout to all the other featured companies also championing the impact of the insect industry in #Singapore. 🇸🇬 Read more here: https://bt.sg/Spgh
