So grateful to be a part of 𝗞𝗿𝗲𝟴𝘁𝗶𝗳! 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 and congratulations as always to Michelle Sta Maria and Team Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) for putting on yet another brilliant gathering of many of the region’s established and emerging creative talents and storytellers. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: Cyber Group Studios CEO Dominique Bourse provided a sobering recap of the current challenges the kids and family content space is facing, with commissions of new shows generally falling off a cliff over the last couple of years, while YouTube as we know has become the dominant holder of young eyeballs. While Bourse is optimistic things will begin to improve for traditional animation programming by late 2026 with 2027 bringing the first full year of growth, his presentation was a sober wake up call for studios and creators et al to look beyond traditional broadcast distribution, which it seems most have yet to do. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: the amazing diversity in content concepts and pitches provided on day one and throughout the business Xchange by the likes of Thailand’s Studio Unaibaan (“teté”), Redmos Animation (“Death Cop”), Monk Studios (“Boba Cafe”) and Art Combo Studio ("Peace Delivery") to Malaysia’s own Janry Productions (“Phantom Pets”), Fuloso (“Kuki Que-C) and Studio Quasa (“Semesta”), among many others. Amidst all of the uncertainty, it’s reassuring to know that SEA’s creators are shining brightly, and according to Bourse, APAC is poised to deliver the highest market growth in the coming years. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Creative destruction. Studios shift from producing for others to producing for themselves (ie. own IP). That movement is underway - it will grow. Real-time production, AI, and machine learning breaking the rules of traditional animation production, leading to more efficient workflows and streamlined, accelerated production timelines. Increased L&M focus on selling directly to consumers buoyed by social media shopping features (YouTube Shopping). Linear will remain, but in an emphatically reduced role. So, as much as this may sound like a crisis (it is), it's clear that embracing change will create, in Bourse’s words, more opportunities than the creative destruction that is currently underway. It will inevitably lead to new revenue, distribution and audience engagement models, and increased creator empowerment and ownership. Amen to that. Special thanks also to Elvis Chew Jessie Tan BEN LEE for lending their time and experience to a very insightful session on IP and character licensing. #MYDCF2024 #MalaysiaDigitalContentFestival2024 #MDEC #kre8tif #levelup #Malaysia #content #kids #animation #gaming #broadcast #youtube #streaming #interactive #roblox #licensing #merchandising #disruption
