Foreign Investors in 2025: Pivot or Pullback? In 2024, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) poured a record USD 3.4 billion into IPO anchor rounds but pulled USD 3.42 billion out of secondary markets. Yesterday, Lighthouse Canton’s Group CEO, Shilpi Chowdhary delivered powerful insights at the Wealth Management Summit Asia panel "Penetrating the mass-affluent market through digitalisation and mass-customisation”. Shilpi shared the stage with distinguished panelists Alex Kokolis, MSCI Inc.,Nayeem Khan, Pictet Group and Wenxian Yeo, Citi under the moderation of Elliot Smither at the FT Live and Professional Wealth Management (PWM)-hosted event which brought together market-leading private banks, family offices, and wealth managers to discuss capturing Asia’s new wave of wealth. Addressing the challenge of defining wealth segments across markets in Asia, Shilpi explained, "There's no universal definition of affluent or high-net-worth," noting how mass affluent in Singapore might be considered high-net-worth in India when viewed through purchasing power parity. Shilpi emphasized how fintech startups maintain their competitive edge through agility and speed—attributes often missing in traditional banking institutions hampered by bureaucracy and legacy systems. As he noted, "Startups don't have the luxury of mediocrity. They must constantly innovate and over-deliver just to survive." On the topic of bank acquisitions of fintech companies, he posed the thought-provoking question: "Will banks adopt the startup mentality, or will the acquired startups lose their innovative edge and succumb to institutional inertia?" His concluding message aligned perfectly with the panel's theme: Organizations that embrace agility, leverage technology as an enabler, and deliver personalized solutions at scale will be best positioned to capture opportunities in the evolving mass affluent segment that remains underserved by traditional institutions.
