The transition to a sustainable future is in full swing but a talent shortage may stall progress. On 30 January, Omar Shahzad, Group CEO of Meinhardt Group, addressed this challenge at the Global Labor Market Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Speaking at the fireside chat, ‘Green Jobs Abound. Talent in Short Supply – Why the Lag?’, he explored the macro trends driving employment and the need to align workforce capabilities with sustainability goals. “I think there are a number of mega trends that the world governments and companies are grappling with. The first is digital transformation, and there's a quest for higher productivity, improved quality, and even more innovation. Digital transformation is affecting every facet of life. And of course, AI is a growth engine,” said Omar. “The world spends about $3 trillion on infrastructure per annum but that is not enough. Recent reports say that with climate change, and with the commitments that the world and countries have made in terms of net carbon zero, global infrastructure spend has to go to $9 trillion pa, and that's approximately 10% of the world GDP. Countries around the world have given themselves tough targets, and by 2030, greenhouse gas emissions have to come down by 50% and quite frankly, the progress made in the last few years, while it's commendable, is still behind the curve,” he added. Despite $900 billion being spent on low-carbon technologies and infrastructure investments in 2020, more is needed. “The IMF…they think that we need to up our infrastructure spending to $5 trillion per annum by 2030 in order to meet global decarbonization targets. And as we know, the world is divided into two halves. You know, the advanced economies, which have more capital, and then obviously, the developing markets. And of course, a lot more of this investment needs to be channelled to the developing markets via the private sector.” he said. However, a major challenge persists — the shortage of skilled professionals. “A lot of people who are working in the workforce don't necessarily have the skills to be able to contribute meaningfully to the green economy. A lot of engineering programmes, even to this day, don't have courses on sustainability or renewable energy. So that's one thing we need to work on,” he said. Omar called for a holistic approach to upskilling and reskilling the workforce, citing Singapore as a best-practice model. “From my perspective, we can't just hope that universities will do a better job of instilling or embedding the curriculum with green attributes or green courses. It's got to be a bigger endeavour than that. In Singapore, we have the SkillsFuture programme, a national upskilling and reskilling initiative that gives every mid-career Singaporean the funding to attend accredited courses in universities and other institutions.” As the race to net zero gains momentum, Meinhardt Group is committed to driving green transformation. #Sustainability #MeinhardtGroup

We are thrilled to announce that Ms Ruchi Bhatia, Executive Director of Energy & Sustainability at Meinhardt SUIT (Smart and Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Transformation), was extensively quoted in a feature article, “Sky-high Demolitions: What is Behind Singapore’s Many Skyscraper Tear-downs”, which was published in The Straits Times on 9 November 2024. Read the full article in The Straits Times: https://lnkd.in/g-2k_ZZn In this in-depth article, Ruchi shared her insights into the critical environmental and socio-economic considerations influencing Singapore’s urban redevelopment approach, especially concerning its implications for sustainability. Her perspective adds a crucial dimension to the ongoing conversation about how Singapore’s limited land availability and pressing developmental needs influence the decisions between re-development versus adaptive re-use in the context of environmental preservation and the Embodied Carbon. “The climate stakes are not insignificant, considering how the built environment is currently responsible for 39 percent of global energy-related carbon emissions. While operational carbon accounts for nearly 70 percent of a building’s carbon emissions, embodied carbon accounts for 30 percent. However, research has shown that if buildings have a shorter lifespan due to constant urban redevelopment, the embodied carbon emissions could account for up to 40 percent of a building’s total emissions,” she noted in the article. These insights identify the environmental costs of demolishing and rebuilding structures before their lifespan is fully utilised. Reflecting on Singapore’s unique urban landscape, Ruchi emphasises the need for a balanced approach that aligns sustainability with the urban density. Singapore, as a land-scarce nation, is progressively shifting towards high-density, mixed-use developments, aimed at reducing commuting times and enhancing the live-work-play environment in tandem with controls on carbon footprint. Her perspective underscores the importance of the thoughtful and well-calibrated redevelopment approach that Singapore is adopting. She further explained how the lifecycle of a building influences the total environmental impact, noting that “The carbon footprint of these redevelopments and construction projects should therefore not be seen in isolation, but should also consider the socio-economic benefits of these renewed development models.” In discussing alternatives to demolition, Ruchi emphasises the value of adaptive reuse or retrofitting older buildings where feasible. This approach can sometimes provide a balance between environmental responsibility and economic practicality. However, she is also mindful that adaptive reuse isn’t always the greener option if the refurbished buildings have poorer operational efficiency. #MeinhardtSUIT #TransformingCitiesShapingtheFuture #Sustainability
