It was a great first day at the 49th session of International Maritime Organization (IMO) FAL yesterday. We particularly enjoyed the excellent presentation from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Port of Rotterdam entitled Demonstration of exchange of nautical, operational and administrative data with International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), IMO and ISO - International Organization for Standardization standards. The presentation was delivered by Gavin Yeo, Deputy Director, Digital & Data Science Division, MPA and Ben van Scherpenzeel, Chairman International Taskforce Port Call Optimization (ITCPO) and Project Officer, Nautical Information, IHMA. It made reference to IHMA’s submission to the committee – FAL 49/INF.6 Improving Data Exchange Between Ports and Hydrographic Offices. We’re proud to cooperate with other industry stakeholders in initiatives that make our ports a safer place to work. Both the INF paper and the presentation are available to IHMA members from the IHMA secretariat. #harbourmasters #shipsandshipping #portsafety

  • Meet Selica Lai, Senior Manager in #MPA’s International Division, where she plays a role in advancing and safeguarding Singapore's maritime interests on the global stage.   Selica is involved in managing MPA’s policies and strategies, forging partnerships with foreign maritime authorities, and enhancing Singapore’s position at key international forums. She also played a key role in organising the inaugural General Assembly of the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), held recently in Singapore in February 2025.   Outside of work, Selica's passion for sports, especially squash, keeps her motivated and active. Much like her role, sports require resilience, discipline, and constant self-improvement. • 𝗠𝗣𝗔 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗘𝘀𝗿𝗶 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 🏅                MPA is honoured to receive the Esri Singapore 2025 GeoInnovation Award for our Methanol Plume Simulation Web App (Pilot) – Integrated Multi-Domain Plume Model! ⚙️ Developed in collaboration with #Esri Singapore and local research institutes, including the Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC), TCOMS - Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore and NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute, this innovative web-based application is a Proof-of-Concept (POC) designed to enhance maritime safety and mitigate environmental risks as we transition to alternative fuels. By integrating hydrographic, AIS, and real-time weather and sea conditions data into a dynamic 3D model, this POC demonstrated that a maritime digital twin strengthens situational awareness, emergency response, and decision-making during incidents such as chemical spills. When developed, such systems will provide alerts, enabling planners to assess risks, prioritise responses, and deploy resources effectively, helping to ensure safer and more resilient maritime operations in Singapore’s waters. At the Esri Singapore GIA Awards, William Wong, MPA’s Deputy Director of the Emergency Preparedness (EP) Department, and Lawrence Chew, MPA’s Digital Twin Engineer, shared how GIS enhances safety and resilience in maritime operations.                Thank you to Esri Singapore and our research partners for this meaningful collaboration, and congratulations to all the winners! 👏 #MaritimeSG

  • 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 📑 #MPA and Enterprise Singapore, through the Singapore Standards Council, have published a new Technical Reference (TR) 129 on Methanol Bunkering, providing a comprehensive framework for the safe and efficient use of #methanol as an alternative marine fuel for bunkering operations. This marks an important step towards operationalising #methanolbunkering at scale and strengthening Singapore’s position as a sustainable, multi-fuel bunkering hub. Key Highlights of TR 129: 📌 Custody transfer requirements for accurate quantity and quality measurement 📌 Safety and operational guidelines, including crew training and competency 📌 Guidance on the use of mass flow meters (MFM) for precise measurement and digital documentation Why it matters: ✅ Enhances safety and efficiency in bunkering operations ✅ Provides shipping companies with better quality and quantity assurance ✅ Supports industry’s confidence in adopting methanol as a viable marine fuel Drawing from the learnings and experiences of landmark methanol bunkering operations in 2023 and 2024, TR 129 is the result of close collaboration between government agencies, industry partners, and research institutes. Announced during the Ministry of Transport’s Committee of Supply Debate 2025, this initiative is part of Singapore’s broader efforts to support the industry’s safe transition to alternative fuels. Alongside TR 129, MPA will introduce additional standards on equipment and operational efficiency for methanol bunker tankers, ensuring a robust framework for methanol bunkering operations in our port. 📅 Join us at Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2025 for insights on TR 129 and its implementation. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gUUnJqsU 📖 TR 129 is available for purchase here: https://lnkd.in/gq8q4MMX Read more: https://lnkd.in/gm5XfiNN #MaritimeSG
