  • And so a new a research centre is coming up: Centre for the Study of Social Inequality (CSSI) at NTU’s School of Social Sciences. To gather, advance, and share insights on inequality in ways that benefit the broader community. Join if interested or feel free to share.

Inequality. Probably more palatable to some if we use words like inclusion, mobility, equity, and so on, but it is what it is. Associate Professor Teo You Yenn (of "This is What Inequality Looks Like" fame) and I are setting up the new Centre for the Study of Social Inequality (CSSI), housed within the School of Social Sciences at NTU. The point is to collate, promote, and communicate knowledge about inequality - in a way that serves the public good. And we are looking for a Centre Manager to join us as we start things up. If you know of anyone suitable, please send them our way! https://lnkd.in/gsd8UKt4

Privilleged and very delighted to be invited to speak at the 'Beijing Forum' last week. I spoke on China's bid to increase its discourse power and the key manifestations of this discourse power. Seeing the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse and walking through the hauntingly beautiful foggy (smoggy?) Beida campus at night were pretty cool experiences. Many thanks to Prof Zhang Qingmin and Peking University for the invitation and warm hospitality and I hope to return to Beijing before long! 🙌 🫶

  • He’s been nominated for both the 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 and the 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 - will Wayne Freeman Chong, PhD - Caregiving Scientist be celebrated for his dedication to eldercare services and contributions to gerontology, his commitment to geriatric psychology and education, or perhaps both? Voting is already creating a buzz, but the real question is: 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐒𝐒𝐒 𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐧𝐢, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐧 27 𝐍𝐨𝐯? GeroPsych Consultants Pte Ltd was founded in 2017 by Wayne Freeman Chong, PhD - Caregiving Scientist, Steven Lim 林培聪, MMC, ACTA and Ms Loo Lee Voon when psychoemotional care for care recipients in intermediate and long-term care facilities in Singapore was a vacuum. Then, Wayne juggled part-time PhD studies with the core operations of the company: service evaluation and psychosocial training for #caregivers. Via strategic contracts, partnerships, and research and evaluation projects, he led the company to grow from one man to what it is today: a 5-man research and training team, a 5-man programme design and consultancy team and a 2-man corporate unit. During the pandemic, Dr Wayne had to grapple with the global human services #business downturn, prepare for the final examination of his PhD thesis, and the sudden loss of his father. His resilience and tenacity led the company to transform analogue services into digital services for caregivers, and secure large grants and strategic partnerships in the blue ocean of geropsychological services in Singapore. Today, we are delighted that our Executive Director, Dr Wayne, is nominated for the NTU School of Social Sciences Alumni Stars Social Impact and Sports Award and the Newborn Stars Award. We wish him the best!

Why has Thailand’s politics been so contested and so intensely polarized in recent decades? How can we account for the persistent democratic regression of the past twenty years, despite the fact that the parallel vigour of progressive oppositional politics remains a source of hope for many? In this episode of Talking Thai Politics, prominent Thai political scientist Prajak Kongkirati discusses his new book Thailand: Contestation, Polarization and Democratic Regression (Cambridge UP, 2024), with Duncan McCargo. Prajak is an associate professor in the Faculty of Political Science at Thammasat University, and is well known for his extensive writings on Thai politics, notably on elections and political violence. His new book is an invaluable introductory text that anyone teaching Southeast Asian politics is likely to assign to their students. On 11 October 2024, the School of Social Sciences (SSS) hosted an insightful Zoominar commemorating 50 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧-𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. With the peace, stability, and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific at the forefront, this discussion convened experts from Japan, Southeast Asia, and beyond to explore the future of these ties from both historical and strategic perspectives. The conversation was enriched by insights from Professor Taizo Miyagi's book, 𝘑𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘯'𝘴 𝘘𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘈𝘴𝘪𝘢. Kei Koga, Head of Programme and Associate Professor in the Public Policy & Global Affairs Programme at NTU, led the session alongside distinguished speakers: - Dr. Rory Medcalf, Head of the National Security College at ANU, who is also a board member for the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations and serves on the ASEAN Regional Forum’s Register of Experts and Eminent Persons. & - Ms. Sharon Seah, Senior Fellow and Coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre and the Climate Change in Southeast Asia Programme at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute. With her extensive background in Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Environment Agency, Ms. Seah offered a rich policy perspective on regional issues.
