SNBC was excited to visit the NUS Agritech Centre managed by NUS Enterprise. It was refreshing to see the efforts put in by the team to host companies to test new technologies for increased productivity. On August 16, 2024, NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI), together with NUS Enterprise, had the pleasure of hosting Singapore Food Agency (SFA) delegates led by Mr. Chan Hian Lim, Deputy CEO (Corporate, Industry, and Technology), at the L'Oréal-NUS Joint Research Initiative Growth Facility located at the NUS Agritech Centre (NAC). My SFA team and I visited the NUS-L’Oreal joint research lab located at NUS Agritech Centre. L’Oreal has a global 4000 scientific workforce with about 15 scientists in Singapore. L’Oreal has been growing high-value phytochemical crops to extract materials for their cosmeceutical products. L’Oreal has set a sustainable 2030 goal where 95% of their product ingredients are to be derived only from bio-materials. Climate impact on open field agriculture is also a real concern. Thus L’Oreal has initiated this project with NUS to demonstrate the potential of Microbiome technology (use of microbes to help crop roots absorb nutrients more efficiently) to raise the yield of phytochemical ingredients from indoor vertical farm ! An interesting use case of vertical farms.

Last week was the final event of the GLOBAL AGRIFOOD TECH ACCELERATOR LAUNCHPAD PROGRAM, that Agrifood Futures ran in collaboration with #Thailand's Kasetsart University International College (KUIC)'s Agricultural Department, FoodInnopolis@Kasetsart, FoodTech Accelerator, PMUC, and NASTDA. Exciting news from the 14th Guangdong-Singapore Cooperation Council meeting! At the MoU signing with Finc Group, witnessed by Singapore Minister for Health, Mr. Ong Ye Kung, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr. Alvin Tan, and Guangdong Governor, Mr. Wang Weizhong, Singrow and Finc will be exploring the opportunity to cultivate mushrooms and strawberries, and build a 'zero-carbon' super plant factory in the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, with an estimated total capital investment of 400 million RMB and an annual return of 450 million RMB. This innovative project will be 5 times larger than the upcoming facility in Sungai Tengah, Singapore, and aims to achieve sustainable production by recycling the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between mushrooms, strawberries, and tomatoes, all powered by rooftop solar cells. 🌱🍓🍄 With bilateral trade between Guangdong and Singapore reaching new heights, we're thrilled to explore these emerging areas of cooperation. Associate Prof Sanjay Swarup, SCELSE Deputy Research Director, was live on Channel News Asia last night! 🎥 Watch the 7-minute video link below. This interview, conducted with Dr Tarun Chopra, Joint Director of the L'Oréal-SCELSE joint laboratory, focused on the strategic research collaboration between L'Oréal and NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI) on soil and plant microbes. Prof Swarup highlighted the groundbreaking work NUS is conducting through SCELSE as well, to discover a wider range of microbes that can replace synthetic agricultural inputs. A test-bed or "grow zone" has also been established with a goal to enhance the yield and quality of aesthetic ingredients without compromising sustainability. Key highlights from Sanjay's discussion include the new findings on: 1. Microbial Communication: How microbes communicate with plants. 2. Chemical Signals: The types of chemical signals exchanged between microbes and plants. 3. Growth Improvement: Methods to improve plant growth. 4. Growth Rate: Enhancing the speed of plant growth. 5. Chemical Production: Identifying the kinds of chemicals microbes can produce to aid plant growth, particularly those connected with high-value cosmetic ingredients, thus supplementing farm incomes.
