Congratulations to the team at Mars for delivering over £88 million in social value across three of its UK CPG businesses! Through providing the business with a holistic understanding of its social, environmental and economic impact this marks a milestone moment in better understanding the value Mars creates beyond its direct operations. As one of the first companies in the world to report beyond financial capital through our Integrated Impact Statement (which we started back in 2017) ofi also measures the impact of our actions on the ground and assesses how these actions impact natural and social capital – aspects which are not covered in conventional financial statements. Coffee = Data x Knowledge x Exchange Interesting discussions at last week’s World Coffee Alliance's Innovation Summit with The World Bank, Starbucks, Volcafe, Tchibo, JDE Peet's, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), International Trade & Forfaiting Association and others, on the bigger role data can play in driving ‘nature positive’ impacts. With consumers demanding ever more information on items they purchase and increasing pressure from new ESG legislation, we know how critical data is to deliver these traceability requirements. But we should also focus on how to apply data-generated insights back at the source, to empower farmers and incentivize more ‘nature-friendly’ practices. Example: our farm data consistently shows that 70% of production comes from 30% of the best performing trees. Recognizing high and low productive spots within your farm allows for both mechanized high-tech (e.g. Brazil) or low-tech (e.g. Vietnam) solutions to precision nutrient management to reduce costs and environmental footprints. #COP16 #regerenativeagriculture #bethechange #coffee #climatechange

At ofi we know the importance of building a nature-positive economy. Ahead of #COP16, I am pleased to have been quoted in the Financial Times article about corporate efforts to becoming ‘nature positive’, written by Susannah Savage. It is clear that if we don't focus on nature, the business that we operate may not even exist in years to come. Farming may not be viable, and farmers may lose their livelihoods if the natural ecosystems that regulate their environment are not protected. As a business that is taking positive action on the ground, and is why we have committed in our Choices for Change strategy to reach 2 million ha of regenerative agriculture in our supply chains and engage in 20 landscape-scale partnerships by 2030. Businesses face a multitude of nature-related risks – and ahead of COP16 Colombia we call on governments to implement robust regulations that inspire meaningful action and enable businesses to take decisive corporate action on nature.
