Navigating New Waters: Future of Additive Manufacturing in the Maritime and Offshore Industry 🌊 Additive Manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, has evolved significantly since its inception in the early 1980s into a key player in modern manufacturing. AM creates 3D parts by adding material layer by layer based on computer-aided design (CAD) models and its true impact is seen in its innovation across various sectors, including the maritime and offshore industry. AM offers key benefits such as reduced lead times for spare parts, design flexibility, minimised tools & inventory pilling, and unnecessary downtimes caused by traditional manufacturing methods. These advantages not only make AM a valuable tool for rapid prototyping and customisation of spare parts but also address the specific needs and requirements of OEMs and end users for their maritime and offshore operations. By integrating with advanced software tools, AM drives innovation further, enhancing efficiency and adaptability in the industry. Some AM technological advancements include: ✔ Diverse printing technologies e.g., Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Selective Laser Sintering, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, etc. ✔ Enhanced printing speeds, precisions, and accuracies The market for AM is growing progressively, with increasing adoption and decreasing costs. The future of AM will benefit from rising demand for customisation and integrating AM with traditional manufacturing methods to optimise production and streamline workflows. We had a fantastic time hosting a sharing session for the students at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Asia. Thanks to the amazing energy and enthusiasm we received from the students, the session was an enriching experience for all involved! See Lin Cheung, our engineer, kicked off the session with a short presentation, introducing the company and giving a recap of our AM technology. The group discussions that followed were the highlight of the session. The students were engaged in lively discussions, sharing about design specifications, technology selection, and pre/post-processing methods for one of our use cases. They built on one another’s ideas, which created an environment full of insightful conversations and contributed to a collaborative learning environment. Thank you to TUM and Peter Mayr for hosting us and we appreciate the warm welcome and the opportunity to connect with such a passionate group of students. We look forward to more collaboration opportunities in the future! Ready to transform your spare parts supply chain with additive manufacturing? Our recent project with Servogear AS highlights how additive manufacturing can solve one of the most important concerns in critical systems – part performance issues. Through understanding the pain points faced by our OEM partner, our team was able to fabricate a flange in aluminium alloy to solve the issue of overheating that connects the diesel engine and electric motor. The part was redesigned to include new features like passive cooling using topologically optimised fins that increased the surface area of the part and improved the cooling performance of the flange, which also resulted in a significant weight reduction of ~70% from 8kg to 2.1kg. This helps ensure uninterrupted operations and eliminates any downtime. The flange was additively manufactured using 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.
