The multi-site DC Due Diligence engagements provided the Client with a clearer understanding of its DC sites' technical capabilities against 𝑇𝐼𝐴-942/𝐵𝐼𝑆𝐶𝐼/𝐼𝑆𝑂 942 standards. This helped inform their future planning for its regional DC strategy. The recent 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 organised by 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐸𝑑𝑔𝑒 brought to light crucial aspects about AI's role in business and sustainability. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬: 1️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: Popular GenAI models consume significant energy, leading to concerns about the carbon footprint. According to the 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝐴𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 (𝐼𝐸𝐴), a single Google search consumes 0.3 watt-hours (Wh) of electricity, while a 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑡𝐺𝑃𝑇 request requires 2.9Wh. 2️⃣ 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐱 - 𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Countries across 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐴𝑠𝑖𝑎  are increasingly adopting 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 as a tool to drive sustainability and lower emissions. In 2024, 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑒’𝑠  Carbon Tax was raised to $25 per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). It will be raised to $45/tCO2e in 2026 and 2027, and likely to $50–80/ tCO2e by 2030. 3️⃣ 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐈 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: Companies can consider using or training smaller, purpose-driven AI models as they can be more effective and environmentally friendly as compared to large, general-purpose ones. IBM is leading the way and actively researching smaller, more energy-efficient models. 4️⃣ 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠: Corporations, especially those in emissions-heavy industries, can benefit from Transition Financing to fund its shift towards greener operations. The 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞-𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 - a guiding framework launched by the 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐴𝑢𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑒 (𝑀𝐴𝑆) in December 2023 - sets out the detailed criteria and thresholds for defining green and transition activities that contribute to climate change mitigation across eight focus areas. The recent 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑤𝑑𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑘𝑒 outage highlights the risks associated with a single point of failure in data management architectures. Centralised systems can become vulnerable where a single system disruption cripples an entire operation. Adopting a hybrid or modern, decentralised architecture with a unified data delivery layer and decoupled data sources mitigates this risk by distributing data access to ensure continued functionality, even during localised failures.
