  • Today (18 Mar) is World Social Work Day! 🥳 To all social work professionals out there, we thank you for your tireless commitment, dedication, and resilience to empowering and enabling good lives. ❤️ Social workers play a crucial role in advocating for well-being, breaking down barriers, and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives. In the #disability sector, this work is even more specialised, requiring deep knowledge of different disabilities and their unique needs, as well as compassion and a person-centred approach. Their expertise is key to fostering full #inclusion and participation for individuals with disabilities and their families. We spoke with Joanne Cheng, Principal Social Worker, about disability social work: “Disability social work should be highly recognised for the vast amount of specialised knowledge and skills that a social worker should possess in order to support and advocate for full inclusion and participation of individuals with disabilities and their families. To promote this cause, there should be a specialised set of training that is developed to support social workers in this area of work.” 💬 – Have the heart to make a difference and #empower children and youths with disabilities? • We welcome the increase in support for persons with disabilities as announced in Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This is a step forward in fostering inclusion and addressing the ‘Post-18 Cliff’. Each year, we see 60 to 90 graduates from our 3 SPED schools, many of whom are at risk of social isolation with limited services and social networks as adults. Beyond employment, there is a need to look holistically at a broader continuum of services due to their diverse disabilities and support requirements. It is encouraging that the government is studying post-18 pathways with stakeholders in a multi-year endeavour. Together, we can work towards better lives for our clients and families. https://lnkd.in/gfwe9jxZ

This year, the Ministry of Social and Family Development (@msfcares) is shining a well-deserved spotlight on the dedicated individuals who are at the heart of the social service sector. The #YearofCelebratingSocialServiceProfessionals honours their passion, commitment, and the life-changing impact they bring to the communities they serve. At Rainbow Centre, we’re proud to celebrate passionate individuals like Lim Yu Jie, our Assistant Senior Occupational Therapist, whose work and values are exactly what we treasure in those who serve in this sector. Yu Jie’s journey began as a child, wanting to include a neighbour with disabilities but not knowing how. Today, she’s a strong advocate, supporting her students with disabilities using the resources and skills she has honed over the years. 💪🏽✨ 📖 Read more at https://lnkd.in/gnW-7jnK 🔗 Inspired to join us in making a giant impact? • 🧠 What do you know about the Post-18 Cliff? For many persons with disabilities (#PwDs) and their caregivers, turning 18 means graduation from #specialeducation school, but also a period where they start losing vital support services which have supported them from birth, putting them at risk of social isolation. The decline in services makes it harder for them to stay meaningfully engaged in the community. But loneliness and social isolation are not concerns exclusive to PwDs. Friendship itself is becoming more elusive in today’s society. A recent study by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) found that the average number of close friends Singaporeans have has dropped significantly—from 10.67 in 2018 to just 6.49 in 2024. Younger individuals (aged 18 to 35) are even more likely to have fewer close friends, regardless of socioeconomic background. This is where initiatives like our #GoodLifeBefrienders (GLBF) Programme comes in! It is designed to be a social solution for young adults with #disabilities, fostering meaningful engagement through shared interests and activities in the community. From having a meal together to enjoying a day out at the park together, every interaction helps bridge this gap. ❣️ Think you’re ready to help us build an #inclusive society, one friendship at a time? Our next ‘Starting on the Good Life’ informative session will be in-person at Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School (501 Margaret Drive) where you will have the opportunity to also join and experience befriending in action after! 🔗 bit.ly/goodlifeinfosession These photos, featuring some of our alumni, are part of Bob Lee’s photo-video project, Finding What’s Next, which highlights the challenges youths with autism face after leaving special education schools at 18.
