Cities where women lead are cities that build healthier, stronger and more inclusive communities. We are calling on cities to share their efforts to advance gender equality for the #WomenInResilience 2025 challenge, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara's Instituto de Planeación y Gestión del Desarrollo del AMG led by CRO Martha Patricia Martínez Barba, Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB), CIDEU and Metropolis, World Association of the Major Metropolises. Last year's edition of the #WomenInResilience challenge featured climate, jobs and public safety initiatives that recognize and value the role of women in their communities from cities across Latin America. This year, we will highlight projects and public policies at the city and metropolitan level that integrate women's empowerment, reducing inequalities and community resilience from all over the world. 👉 Read the call for submissions here: https://lnkd.in/d53dwVTe 👉 To participate, cities should submit their #WomenInResilience initiatives by 4 April here: https://lnkd.in/dsXEX6K4

Many growing cities produce more waste than they can keep up with, but community-led solutions prove that minimizing waste is possible. The Residents of Kasturba Nagar Association organized volunteers and partners like Chennai Resilience Centre, Okapi Research and Advisory Pvt Ltd to help pilot low-cost, practical ways to reduce household waste. Residents are crucial to the system's success—the secret is making the process "so effortless that not doing it feels ridiculous" says Professor Indumathi M. Nambi, PhD, FNAE, whose civil engineering students contributed to the effort. Chennai is demonstrating that a circular future is possible when the solutions are easy and everywhere. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #CommunityResilience

What if instead of starting with what's wrong, cities look at their communities' strengths? "Sometimes, we just label whole communities as vulnerable" says Karl Astbury. "We should instead be looking at what's really strong within a community and what can we build on." Through #Resilience4Communities, residents are actively contributing to planning and putting in practice resilience-building initiatives. Local governments and private-sector partners are enabling and supporting communities to shape their future and thrive. "Futures for all cannot be imagined by the few," argues Pupul Bisht—that's why in Calgary, equity-deserving communities are adding their perspectives to the decisions being taken in the city. Calgary's Collective Futures Imagination Program brings the voices of young leaders into the city's strategic planning and decision-making processes using UNESCO's innovative Futures Literacy Laboratory framework. From climate change to pandemics and economic crisis, Futures Literacy Labs are a powerful tool for learning to cope with, adapt to and change the conditions of change. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver #CommunityResilience City of Calgary | Jeny Mathews-Thusoo

💡 All cities have the power to make choices today that will create a better life for communities—despite heat waves. Giving communities information and tools about how their health can be affected by extreme heat and implementing early warning systems are low-cost solutions with high impact. R-Cities' Lauren Sorkin and Valerie Brown share how building heat resilience can become a gateway to solving other urban challenges in the latest issue of #UrbanSolutions from Centre for Liveable Cities.
The latest issue of #UrbanSolutions is out now! Titled “Resilience and Regeneration”, this issue explores how urban planning, underpinned by regenerative design and development, enhances cities’ climate resilience. Regenerative design is an urban development approach for high-density cities to remain highly liveable in a climate-changed and resource-constrained future. This allows cities to achieve net benefits while addressing multiple developmental needs, rather than having to make trade-offs. Centred on regeneration, issue #25 examines key tenets of climate financing, carbon-sensitive design, and community engagement, reimagining the future of nature-centric, carbon-positive, and circular urban development. Not all cities have control over energy. Semarang and Jakarta's energy systems depend on policy decisions outside their direct control, but both are seeking ways to provide better service for residents all the same. “Limited authority should not mean inaction," affirmed Muhammad Luthfi, CRO and Deputy Director of Semarang Development Planning Agency. Both cities are embracing energy initiatives to chart the course of their own energy transitions and improve the lives of communities: 🔌🚌 Jakarta is electrifying buses to reduce energy consumption and air pollution—contributing to people's health. ☀️🏢 Semarang is incentivizing solar rooftops—reducing energy costs for communities. Read Jakarta and Semarang's 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 to explore how these two cities are taking local energy leadership, implementing energy solutions for a brighter energy future and a better life for residents. https://lnkd.in/dcuecSCZ

🔧🌱What if cities had the resources to fully harness digital public goods for resilience-building? Open-source tools, resilience assessments and data platforms can help cities tackle climate risks, but many - especially in low and middle-income countries - struggle to adopt them because of limits in funding, expertise and capacity. Our next #CitiesOnTheFrontline session, will explore how cities are overcoming these barriers and turning global digital public goods into real-world solutions. Ross Eisenberg, Marie-Flore Michel, Pierre Chrzanowski, World Bank Disaster Risk Management Specialists, and Tanner Lewis, Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, will showcase how open-source tools, nature-based solutions and data-driven strategies are transforming urban resilience. ⬇ Register now and save the date! 📅 Thursday, March 27 https://lnkd.in/eGcnuPP9 Co-developed: Resilient Cities Network | Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) | World Bank Group's City Resilience Program

International Women’s Day is about progress and action—but today, we can’t ignore the setbacks. Around the world, hard-won rights for women and unrepresented communities are being stripped away. This year, more than ever, we stand with our #WomenInResilience—the leaders turning vision into action, transforming policies into protection, and building CITIES where EVERYONE thrives. While national governments stall or roll back rights, cities are moving forward.✊ 🔊 From early warning systems to social programs, from climate action to community-led initiatives, women are driving urban solutions that reshape the future, one decision, one project, one partnership at a time. Cities are proving that change doesn’t wait for permission. Fear and uncertainty won’t define our urban future—stronger communities, bolder partnerships, and decisive action will. This IWD, we celebrate resistance. Because real change happens when cities take the lead. Now is the time to double down on solutions, scale impact, and ensure every breakthrough benefits women and girls today and for generations to come. 💡 Programs like Mulher Salvador remind us what’s possible when cities act. And soon, we’ll be sharing exciting news about what’s next… For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment. RESILIENCE. #IWD2025 #ForAllWomenAndGirls.

We are deeply saddened by the news of Congressman Sylvester Turner’s passing this week. A lifelong public servant, Sylvester was a fierce champion of local action and worked to prove that cities could deliver on global goals. As Mayor of Houston—the Energy City—he guided his community through disasters and boldly advanced urban resilience action, navigating complexity with focus and grace. As the inaugural Chair of the Resilient Cities Network Board of Directors, Sylvester steered our organization from its humble beginnings during COVID-19 to an influential force active in 47 countries and over 100 cities around the globe. His unwavering commitment to empowering communities and driving for sustainability and economic opportunity leaves an indelible mark on all of us who were privileged to work alongside him. May his legacy inspire us to bridge differences, to confront challenges head-on, and to be more generous with our time and our smiles. — Resilient Cities Network
