  • A brief look at our company history: 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗺𝘁𝘂 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 with the world's first high-speed diesel railcar engine, the Maybach G 4a (a six-cylinder engine with 150 hp at 1300 rpm). Maybach-Motorenbau pushed forward with development work and in the 1930s launched a new generation of engines on the market, the GO engines. Since 1924, 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘀-𝗥𝗼𝘆𝗰𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟱,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. More than half of all railcars in Europe are powered by mtu engines, and when it comes to locomotives, Rolls-Royce, with its mtu brand, is among the top four suppliers worldwide. Our current 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, such as mtu Series 4000 and 1600 engines for locomotives and mtu PowerPacks underfloor drive systems for railcars, are approved for sustainable fuels such as HVO. Did you know that our gas systems play an important role to support the energy transition? “One point is the use of the CO2 neutral or Co2 free fuel hydrogen and the second important piece is the capability to operate very flexible to stabilize the grids”, explains Michael Wagner, our Director Product and Solutions Management Gas Systems. Another very promising fuel for generating clean, economical and sustainable electricity and heat is biogas. Our new generation of mtu gas gensets allows for cost-saving, sustainable and efficient operation using biogas both for primary power supply and to balance energy peaks.  #worldenergyday #sustainablefuels #powergeneration #energytransition #hydrogen #biogas

  • #100yearsago: In October 1924, the German reparations airship LZ 126, powered by VL 1 engines from our predecessor company Maybach Motorenbau started in Friedrichshafen to cross the Atlantic. Five twelve-cylinder V-engines, each with an output of 309 kW (421 hp) at 1400 rpm, cover the 8050 km route to the US city Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 81 hours.   “In the air, on land, on water.” In the mid-1920s, the company worked intensively on this motto to develop drives for all types of transportation – engines for commercial vehicles, in a slightly modified form for boats, and the first diesel engines for railcars. The company developed transmissions for vehicles, ships, and railways in order to offer an optimal system. In the 1930s, high-performance gasoline engines were added.   #companyhistory #100yearsago #history #enginehistory #maybach #predecessorcompany

  • One great example of how our current technologies enable climate-friendly shipping solutions is Scandlines’ new freight ferry, the Futura. It will soon be delivered from the Turkish CEMRE SHIPYARD and will operate between Puttgarden in Germany and Rødby in Denmark.   To provide backup power for the battery-powered vessel, and support the propulsion demands when operating in plug-in hybrid mode to assist in reaching the service speed of 20 knots, the ferry relies on our cleanest ever mtu marine generator sets with Series 4000 engines. These engines are already contributing to the goal of significantly reducing emissions: the optimal fuel efficiency of the latest generation of our mtu marine engines is combined onboard with an SCR system and thus overfulfilling the strict NOx limits of emissions regulation IMO Tier III. The ferry is even prepared for the future to easily replace the diesel genset with our climate-friendly mtu #methanol engines which we are currently developing. In the video, you can see how the mtu generator sets were installed in the hull of the Futura last year.   #mtuSolutions #sustainablePropulsion #scandline #cemreshipyard

  • With renewables the volatility in energy production is increasing. At the same time the predictability of energy production is decreasing. Storage systems and decentralized energy solutions are important cornerstones of a stable and affordable energy production. "It is very important that we do what we can do fast, that we are investing in the energy transition with available technologies and not wait for a big technology shift", says Andreas Görtz, our President Business Unit Mobile & Sustainable. #energytransition #sustainability #energystorage #mtusolutions #BESS #energyproduction

  • Around 1,500 engines and systems as well as thousands of components are overhauled, repaired or remanufactured in our Rolls-Royce Reman centers every year - and the trend is rising. PowerPacks for railcars in particular, but also our mtu Series 2000 and 4000 engines used in trains or gensets, are completely overhauled, fully refurbished and then reused in a standardized process.  "This is not only sustainable, but also economical," explains Marc Goldschmidt, our Head of Remanufacturing & Overhaul+ Technologies who adds that customers are increasingly asking for CO₂-optimized yet economical products, solutions and manufacturing processes. • Electricity from wind and sunlight is often produced precisely when it is not needed. Large batteries that store this energy are therefore a key pillar of the energy transition. One project of capicity provider SemperPower where our mtu EnergyPacks are in use is located in Vlissingen in the Netherlands. It consists of 168 mtu EnergyPacks QG, which are housed in containers and have a combined output of 30 megawatts and a storage capacity of 63 megawatt hours. In addition to the mtu QG EnergyPacks, seven inverters and the intelligent mtu EnergetIQ control platform, we also supplied the balance-of-plant infrastructure such as the foundations, fencing and lighting. "The team from Rolls-Royce really did a great job here and installed the entire system within nine months," praises Jacob Jan Stuyt, Commercial Director and head of the Dutch Developer and Capicity provider SemperPower. SemperPower does not use the storage units itself, but rents the capacities to customers who use them for energy markets. Their goal is clearly defined: The Dutch electricity grid ⚡ must be kept stable.  Find out more in our story ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eiJXqs3t #energytransition #BESS #batterystorage #energystorage #gridstability

  • 98,000 times per minute, the turbine and turbine and compressor wheels of some mtu turbochargers rotate on their own axis. It is the turbocharger that ensures that the engine is supplied with the right amount of air and enhances the power output in relation to the given cylinder capacity: It pumps air into the combustion chamber. The more effectively it does so, the more oxygen is available. And the more oxygen there is available, the more fuel will be combusted. The more fuel combusted, the higher the engine output.
