Overcoming the reticle limit: As a quick refresher on why so many #CPU #designs are moving away from #monolithic #architectures, it largely comes down to two factors: #reticle #limits and #yields. Generally speaking, short of #major #improvements in process #technology, more cores inevitably mean more #silicon. However, there are practical limits to how big dies can actually get - we refer to this as the reticle limit - which is roughly 800mm^2. Once you bump up against the limit, the only way to continue #scaling the compute is to use more dies.

📊 Global Semiconductor Market Projected for Strong Growth Through 2025 The semiconductor industry is on an upswing, with global revenue forecasted to increase by 14% in 2025, reaching an estimated $717 billion, according to Gartner's latest report. Key sectors driving this growth include memory and graphics processing units (GPUs). 🔹 Memory Market Surge: Worldwide memory revenue is set to rise 20.5%, reaching $196.3 billion in 2025. Notably, NAND flash prices are projected to spike by 60% in 2024 due to undersupply but may ease by 3% in 2025 as supply improves. Consequently, NAND flash revenue could grow 12% in 2025, totaling $75.5 billion. 🔹 DRAM Recovery: Increased demand and improved supply for DRAM, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DDR5, are anticipated to push DRAM revenue to $115.6 billion in 2025, up from $90.1 billion in 2024. 🔹 GPU Growth: GPUs, integral to AI model training, are projected to generate $51 billion in 2025, a 27% increase. The focus now shifts toward ROI, with inference revenue expected to grow significantly. 💡 As AI demand surges and electronic production rebounds, the industry remains optimistic. Yet, weak demand in automotive and industrial sectors could present challenges. Chiplets are Transforming the Semiconductor Industry: A Deep Dive into Market Growth and Applications The rise of chiplet technology is shaping the future of semiconductors, offering substantial benefits over traditional monolithic designs. According to a recent IDTechEx report, the chiplet market is projected to reach $411 billion by 2035, driven largely by demands from data centers, AI, and other high-performance computing sectors. Chiplet architecture, which breaks complex chips into smaller, task-specific components, provides manufacturers with greater flexibility and allows for quicker upgrades and customization. This approach helps overcome challenges like reticle limits and improves manufacturing efficiencies by reducing costs, boosting yields, and enhancing supply chain resilience. Major industry players, including AMD and Intel Corporation, are already leveraging chiplet technology. AMD’s EPYC processors and Intel’s Ponte Vecchio GPUs exemplify this shift, highlighting chiplets' growing role in high-performance applications. IDTechEx’s report identifies key growth areas: ▪ Servers & HPC: High demand in data centers. ▪ Telecom, 5G, IoT: Efficiency in network solutions. ▪ PCs & Mobile Devices: Performance customization. ▪ Automotive: Enhanced multifunctionality. The report, “Chiplet Technology 2025-2035,” explores chiplet basics, manufacturing processes, interconnect standards, and thermal management, analyzing the impact of chiplets on future industry innovations. As the semiconductor landscape evolves, chiplets appear poised to drive robust growth and industry collaboration across applications.
