Common tropes about Singapore include “Disneyland with the death penalty” and “Crazy Rich Asians”. One Singaporean author wanted to challenge these stereotypes by showing readers Singapore’s rich multilingual environment. Rachel Heng’s sophomore novel, The Great Reclamation (published by Penguin’s Riverhead Books), is a historical epic that explores 1940s and 50s Singapore. It’s received glowing reviews and landed on Amazon’s best-selling lists. While her novels– which deal with Singapore’s decolonisation– are written primarily for Singaporean audiences, they contain several universal themes. “What one owes to family, to country and to oneself – these are questions everyone has to grapple with. And I wanted to explore how the people around us can shape our values and choices in unpredictable and surprising ways.” Learn more about Rachel’s journey as an author here: https://lnkd.in/gS9PJE5y #SingaporeGlobalNetwork #SingLit

Educated at Duke University and Harvard University in America, he has worked at leading tech pioneers such as Google, Rakuten and Twilio. His career has taken him to global tech hubs in America, China and Japan, where he’s spearheaded market-first innovations such as the Rakuten AirMap. When Bryna Sim and her family relocated from Singapore to Toronto in 2018, they found themselves 15,000 km away from everything familiar. Rather than feeling isolated, Bryna embraced the opportunity to rebuild a sense of belonging in a new land. Determined to connect, she opened her home to students, hosted gatherings, co-launched a podcast about navigating life abroad, organised National Day celebrations, and served as a parent representative at her children’s school.
