The increase in high-net worth individuals in India is increasing the appetite for wealth management services, and Singapore’s banks are looking to lure in prospective customers, bolstered by its preferential regulatory and tax environment. Singapore and Dubai have emerged as the key recipients of India’s growing wealth. Singapore in particular with its long-standing reputation as a stable financial centre, its emphasis on long-term wealth preservation and succession planning, has been a magnet for India’s ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Kevin Teng shares that previously, the immense wealth generated in China and the growing sophistication of its affluent population drove significant investment in building out teams to cater to this clientele. He adds that in recent years, the regulatory environment in China has become increasingly complex, making it more challenging for foreign financial institutions to operate smoothly. There have also been significant trickle-down effects on the banking and wealth management industry from companies relocating their manufacturing bases from China to India, bringing along the entire value and supply chains. Chief Executive Officer | WRISE Wealth Management Singapore

As we celebrate Singapore’s 59th National Day 🇸🇬, I am filled with immense pride for my island nation. For me, National Day is more than just a celebration of Singapore’s achievements; it’s also a time to reflect on one’s identity. In many ways, the way in which we define ‘home’ is mirrored in our financial decisions, where biases and emotional ties often influence our choices. In wealth management, many often gravitate towards what feels familiar and safe – our ‘home.’ This inclination, known as ‘home bias’, refers to the tendency of investors to favour domestic investments over foreign ones. While home bias can provide a sense of security, it often leads to an over-concentration in local markets, limiting diversification and potentially hindering financial growth. Striking a balance between home bias and diversification is essential for building robust and resilient investment portfolios. The team at WRISE supports our clients and mitigate such biases in their portfolios. To provide broader investment opportunities, we help clients grow, manage and protect their wealth through a comprehensive 360-degree wealth ecosystem. Clients spur us to continue driving innovation in wealth management. Beyond client endorsements, I’m proud that the industry has recognised our accomplishments, winning industry awards and being recognised by our partner banks. We are only as strong as each other, and WRISE’s strength lies in our diverse team of experts that power the next era of wealth management. Beyond wealth management, our team takes the time to give back to society – a cause that I personally find both fulfilling and meaningful. We collaborate with various associations to pack and deliver care packages for families in need. Just last month, we partnered with The Girl’s Brigade to contribute and deliver WISH gifts to their beneficiaries. People are at the heart of WRISE, and corporate social responsibility is integral to our culture. We strive to continue making a positive impact on the community. WRISE has come a long way since our beginnings. As we celebrate National Day, I am inspired by Singapore's growth and accomplishments over the last 59 years with values of unity and belonging that our leaders have fostered in us. As I continue to lead WRISE, I hope to channel the same strength in unity in growing our team. With all the plans we have in the pipeline, I am optimistic about what our team will achieve in the coming months. I look forward to working in unity to reach new heights and drive the future of wealth management. #wrise #wrisesg #ndp2024 #singapore

WRISE Group plans to hire 300 new staff members in 2024, expanding from its current team of 260 across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Dubai, despite widespread layoffs in the private banking sector. Kevin Teng highlights that WRISE’s focus is on clients with assets between $10 million and $30 million, which he considers the "sweet spot" for optimising portfolios and enhancing returns through tailored investment strategies and personalised wealth management services. He emphasises the need to move beyond traditional asset allocation models, noting the underperformance of the 60/40 strategy, which has yielded only a 2.2% annual growth rate. Kevin suggests incorporating alternatives like private equity, hedge funds, and real estate commodities to manage risks related to inflation and market instability. Kevin also discusses challenges faced by external asset managers (EAMs), such as increased regulatory scrutiny, talent shortages, geopolitical uncertainties, and market volatility. He points to recent MAS regulatory updates following a major money laundering case as evidence of heightened oversight. To comply with these regulations, EAMs will need to invest heavily in infrastructure and specialised staff, posing significant operational and cost challenges. China is strengthening its ties with the Middle East to diversify its economic and trade partnerships beyond the US and Western markets. This collaboration includes using the Renminbi (RMB) for cross-border trade and investment, especially with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Major Chinese banks like Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and ICBC are expanding in the region, alongside China International Capital Corporation, which has opened offices in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The UAE is a key offshore RMB center in the Middle East, with institutions like Qatar National Bank and Saudi National Bank enhancing their RMB capabilities. This move aims to access diversified funding sources and a broader investor base, supporting initiatives like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which focuses on clean energy, green infrastructure, and economic diversification. Investment flows between the Middle East and China are growing, with increased interest in Chinese equities. Joel Tan of WRISE Private Hong Kong highlighted opportunities for Middle Eastern investors in sectors beyond oil and real estate, such as technology, consumer goods, and manufacturing. He observed an increasing interest among Middle Eastern clients in alternative currencies, including the yuan, noting that Chinese assets are currently underrepresented in their investment portfolios. WRISE’s Dubai office targets ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices. As the relationship between the two countries deepens, the next few years will bring both challenges and significant opportunities.
