This use case illustrates the huge potential of 5G to transform warehouse operations, increasing operational efficiency and workforce safety. 5G-enabled technologies in the connected warehouse include: 🥽 Augmented reality (AR) goggles display information in real-time for AR-assisted order picking – improving pick productivity by 30%. 🤚Instead of a handheld barcode scanner, workers wear a special ring scanner on their hand, for a safer and more productive working environment. 🏭 For inventory counting, a 5G-enabled drone captures images in the warehouse and generates a list of barcodes in 20 minutes, instead of taking three hours when done manually. Oracle has announced a plan to train up to 10,000 students and professionals in artificial intelligence over the next three years in Singapore. Among the initiatives is the offer of 300 internships and apprenticeships to polytechnic students, who will have an opportunity for employment within Oracle or its partners post-training. From my perspective, this initiative will be beneficial for both Singapore and Oracle. Launching education initiatives can have several strategic advantages, both internally for operations and externally for market and community impact. Let's delve deeper into why I believe this. 1) These initiatives can serve as a direct pipeline for recruiting top talent. Participants who have completed Oracle's training programs are more likely to be considered for recruitment, already knowing the company's culture and processes. 2) They will improve their CSR profile by contributing to education, enhancing public perception, and increasing brand loyalty among consumers. 3) They are also expanding their user base by educating potential users on their technologies. For example, Oracle training individuals on its specific platforms or tools increases the likelihood that these tools will be adopted. 4) Education initiatives can strengthen the ecosystems around their products or services by increasing the number of people who can use or support their technology. 5) Companies that are actively involved in education may have a greater voice in policy discussions related to technology and education. This could potentially influence regulations that affect their business. 6) In industries with stringent regulation, investing in societal goods like education can generate goodwill with regulatory bodies. In conclusion, Oracle's educational initiatives in Singapore represent a forward-thinking strategy that supports its business goals while contributing positively to the broader tech landscape. I had the privilege of moderating a dialogue with the Republic of Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize Presentation Dinner last evening, the opening act of Singapore International Water Week (SIWW). President Tharman co-chairs the Global Commission on the Economics of Water and is well versed with the challenges, development and solutions to sustain global hydrological cycle. I posed the following questions to the President and his responses were thoughtful and forward looking. A fuller account is found in the Straits Times article appended. Water Scarcity  A World Resource Institute (WRI) report tells us, 51 out of 164 countries expects to suffer high water stress by 2050. Agriculture accounts for 72% of global freshwater withdrawals, its efficiency across the world is poor. Industrialisation too, as 60 largest economies will face serious water shortages. The picture is grim. Are you hopeful that we can safe humanity from a Water Armageddon? Water Innovation and Adaptation  Changes to the global hydrological cycle have led to unprecedented floods, droughts, and heat waves. One child under the age of five dies every 80 seconds from diseases caused by water pollution. 2 billion people have no access to safe water. The Global Commission for the Economic of Water published a report last year, saying we must drive costs of technologies down by adopting them at scale. How can we move from the path of mutually assured destruction to mutually assured prosperity across all fronts of policy, science, innovation, adaptation, and investment? Natural Capital in the Global Commons  The UN's 'Earth Summit' was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The Summit had many great achievements, notably the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Convention on Biological Diversity. So, Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss were identified as Nature’s existential threats at the same starting point 32 years ago. Since then, scientific evidence has turned Climate Change from crisis into accounting; accounting then turned into policy, corporate responsibility and consumer behaviour. We are loathed to put our children into financial debt and increasingly climate debt, yet we are nonchalant, to subject our children to nature debt. Why is this, and what must we do? Inter-Generational Investment Two years ago, UN Biodiversity Conference COP15 in Montreal defined objectives to finance biodiversity initiatives, in particular, through private finance. Money gravitates to where the best return is found, but advancing nature is not. How can capital owners, investors, companies, NGOs, and policy makers do to accelerate capital deployment to preserve biodiversity and invigorate nature’s ecosystems? These are crucial commitments in a time of global uncertainty and rapid change. *On Employment Support* The government’s focus on upskilling through initiatives like SkillsFuture shows a recognition of the evolving job market. However, we must consider the realities for those who may find it harder to adapt, such as our aging population and lower-wage workers. The question is not just about providing opportunities, but ensuring that these opportunities are accessible and truly beneficial for all. *On Housing Affordability* Housing remains a cornerstone of our social fabric, and the new frameworks are steps toward making homeownership more attainable. Yet, as we continue to see rising property prices, we need to ask whether these measures will be enough to keep homes within reach for the average Singaporean. The balance between market forces and social equity is delicate, and we must navigate it carefully to ensure fairness for all. *On Cost of Living* Efforts to manage the cost of living through vouchers and rebates are essential, especially for those most affected by inflation. However, while these measures provide necessary relief, we must also look at long-term strategies to address the root causes of economic pressure. Sustained growth and wage increases are critical, but so too is the need for innovation and productivity gains that can outpace inflation. Fellow Singaporeans, the challenges we face are complex, and there are no simple answers. It is easy to focus on the immediate and the urgent, but we must also keep an eye on the horizon. Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to come together, to debate, to question, and to strive for solutions that are inclusive and forward-looking. This National Day, let’s celebrate not just our successes, but also our commitment to continually improve and adapt. Let’s support our leaders in their efforts, but also engage critically and constructively to ensure that the path we are on is one that benefits all Singaporeans, now and in the future. 🚀 Governance in Promoter-less Companies 🚀 Over the past decade, two significant trends have reshaped the domestic business landscape: 1️⃣ The End of Business Dynasties: Massive social and business changes have disrupted the notion of built-in succession in business dynasties. Many iconic names are selling to PE firms or going public as the next generation seeks different aspirations. 2️⃣ Emergence of Single Generation Companies: Founders from professional middle-class backgrounds are often single-generation entrepreneurs. Like me, who broke from a family tradition of government service, many show their children that pursuing one's passion is key. My son, having witnessed CAMS' evolution and the passion that drove it, chose to follow his own passion rather than becoming effectively a "professional manager" in a now-listed CAMS. The result? A rise in promoter-less listed companies. While there's nothing inherently wrong with this, our governance framework hasn't kept pace. The role of Independent Directors (IDs) in these companies is more demanding—they must take greater ownership and ensure effective board supervision. It's too easy for IDs to be present physically but absent mentally, leaving governance largely to the CEO. I recently came across an insightful example from Singapore, where developed economies are placing significant responsibility on board members. India should follow suit. Will it or wouldn't it? IMHO, there will be impact but as the experts seem to indicate, may likely be shortlived. It may not have as much impact for the majority. High prices have made it that generally, nearly everyone I speak to has a mortgage that is about 20 years and some, longer than that. And that, due to high property prices, bulk of their monthly CPF contributions are used to service that mortgage. ....when that CPF contribution should be steadily accumulated for retirement... Want to bring resale prices down? Am I mistaken to assume that this can be achieved thru building more new flats faster & selling them at lower prices? New flats then set the benchmark (and compete) for older resale flats. Would this work better than tweaking LTV? https://lnkd.in/gqpwbz7y

Thank You, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong During his tenure as Prime Minister and Finance Minister from 2001 to 2007, Mr Lee Hsien Loong steered Singapore's economy to new heights, cementing the city-state's status as a thriving global hub of innovation and commerce. Under his astute leadership, Singapore navigated multiple economic crises, including the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic, emerging stronger each time. PM Lee's strategic economic policies and foresight have been instrumental in driving Singapore's remarkable growth and development. Singapore's GDP more than doubled to over $673.3 billion by 2023, compared with $194.4 billion in 2004. The GDP per capita surged to around $113,779, compared with $46,664 in 2004. Based on studies done by the International Monetary Fund, Singapore is among the top 10 worldwide in terms of living standards. This stellar economic performance was underpinned by PM Lee's focus on transforming Singapore into a global financial hub and stimulating innovations that have kept the economy globally competitive. When the Global Financial Crisis struck in 2008, PM Lee's prudent stewardship guided Singapore to a swift V-shaped recovery, with GDP expanding by an impressive 14.5% in 2010. Similarly, despite the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore's healthcare system demonstrated remarkable resilience and preparedness. Singapore generally avoided the overwhelming strain experienced in many other countries. Furthermore, Singapore's robust financial reserves, accumulated under PM Lee's tenure. It enabled the government to implement substantive support measures that helped the economy weather the pandemic's economic impacts and mitigated the severity of the downturn. PM Lee's visionary launch of the Smart Nation initiative in 2014 set Singapore on a strategic course towards comprehensive digital transformation. This initiative has positioned the country at the forefront of leveraging technology and data to enhance living standards, create greater economic opportunities, and strengthen social cohesion within communities. The foresight proved invaluable during the COVID-19 recession, as strategic investments in higher value-added sectors helped power the recovery. In addition to driving economic progress, PM Lee has also made significant strides in improving social welfare. The median income for full-time employees nearly doubled under his tenure, with lower-income Singaporeans benefiting even more, as their wages more than doubled. Social spending tripled to $53 billion by 2023, expanding healthcare for an aging population and addressing inequality through government interventions and transfers. 👩‍💼 32% of women are in senior leadership positions... *not great*... ♿ 6% of people with disabilities are in senior leadership positions... *shockingly bad* 👩‍⚖️ ♿ females with a disability don't even get a stat in terms of leadership roles.... *embarrassing*. These are 3 stats that need to change... but how easy is it to do? So in some ways, Singaporeans are not very Asian! Disclaimer: I can't find how the Ranstad's report defines "Singaporean" in their survey (i.e. only citizens, citizens and PRs or Singapore-based employees?). Nonetheless, the below findings do resonate with me and I am surprised the rest of Asia differs so much.... Also, I attribute my views to my inherent cynicism (Being a fan of the cyberpunk genre from an early age have shaped my views of corporations.) 1. Only 1 in 10 of Singapore-based workers believe their career is influenced by the employer more than themselves. 2. Only 5% of Singapore-based workers says the employer is responsible for their motivation at work. 3. Only 9% of Singapore-based workers says the employer is responsible for their motivation at work. The article goes deeper into the which countries Singapore is surprisingly similar with and more.
