💡 NEW Report: Asian Utilities Engagement Program (AUEP) 2023 - 2024 Year in Review. This report highlights the important progress made by Asian electric utility companies over the past year in their journey towards net zero. Since the Program's inception in 2021, discussions have evolved from making general commitments to ramping up renewable capacity and having more concrete phase-out plans for existing coal power plants. Asia's electric utility sector plays a key role in the energy transition. AIGCC convened the AUEP initiative to connect influential regional investors with leading Asian power companies, urging them to take ambitious action on climate. The Program today includes 20 investors with $11 trillion in assets under management or advice, who engage with 7 power companies across 5 Asian markets. AIGCC remains committed to facilitating engagements among investors, key companies, and policymakers, accelerating the shift toward renewable energy. #NoBurnWednesday GAIA members Consumer_Penang CAP and Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) have urged the Malaysian government to cancel proposed Waste-to-Energy (WtE) incineration projects and shift towards a zero waste approach. In their memorandum, CAP and SAM highlight the environmental, economic, and health risks associated with WtE incinerators, which divert resources from sustainable solutions. ⚡ Powering ASEAN's Future: The Urgent Need for Modernized Energy Grids ⚡ The recent report highlighting the substantial waste of renewable energy globally due to inadequate power grid infrastructure serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the ASEAN region. As we strive to achieve a sustainable energy future, the modernization of our energy grids is not just an option, but an absolute necessity. The current limitations of our grids hinder the full potential of renewable energy sources. Without the capacity to accommodate the variable nature of wind and solar power, we are losing valuable opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The economic and environmental costs are simply too significant to ignore. It is imperative that we invest in upgrading and expanding our energy infrastructure. This includes the development of smarter grids capable of managing the fluctuations inherent to renewable energy. Additionally, we must explore innovative solutions like energy storage, demand-side management, and improved forecasting to maximize the utilization of clean energy sources. At the upcoming ASEAN International Conference for Energy and the Environment organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy, I will have the privilege of introducing one such innovative solution that has the potential to revolutionize our energy grids. This technology promises to enhance grid flexibility, optimize energy distribution, and pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy system in ASEAN. The time for action is now. A recent US-Singapore feasibility study has revealed the potential of an ASEAN power grid to drive significant socio-economic benefits across the region. The study examined the renewable energy landscape and the existing grid infrastructure in ASEAN countries, finding that beyond supplying green electricity and boosting energy security, the grid could create up to 9,000 new jobs annually and attract greater investment in the energy sector. Speaking at the Singapore International Energy Week, Dr. Dan Gaspar, Deputy Director of Net Zero World Initiative, presented the study’s findings and highlighted how the proposed ASEAN grid could help meet rising electricity demands, reduce air pollution levels, and create a more resilient energy network across Southeast Asia. During the latest G20 summit, Indonesia's President, Prabowo Subianto, announced an ambitious push to achieve #netzero emissions by 2050 and end fossil fuel use in the power sector by 2040. A plan that combines accelerated coal-fired power plant (CFPP) retirement with rapid expansion of renewable energy infrastructure can achieve this goal. My IEEFA Asia Pacific colleague Mutya Yustika and I share some thoughts on the way forward in our latest brief. With falling costs for #solar, #wind and #batterystorage technologies and a current over-supply condition on major parts of Indonesia's electricity grid, a green transformation is possible. State utility PLN's older CFPP assets could be prioritized for retirement while formulas for addressing IPPs are evolved. At the same time, Gigawatts of renewable energy will need to be added each year for at least the next two decades. This will require a project development, tendering, and implementation "factory" to deliver. It is possible, but demands an 'all-hands-on-deck' level of attention that may require a new approach to project delivery in the country. As a former infrastructure #PPP practitioner, the formula for success is well-defined, but has proven difficult globally to implement consistently, as it requires prioritization, focused upfront preparatory efforts, unwavering focus on, detail, objectivity and reliable implementation. This time, this effort could play out differently, for the benefit of the Indonesian economy.

⚡ The #Philippines’ DOE sees big RE Certificate shortfall for RPS starting 2025 The Department of Energy (DOE) projects that Luzon Distribution Utilities, which have REC requirements under the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) of around 7 million RECs in 2025, will be short of their obligation by around 4 million RECs. Meanwhile, utilities from Visayas and Mindanao regions also have REC shortfalls with figures of 0.77 million RECs and 0.71 million RECs, respectively for 2025. The details of the RPS levels were discussed during the DOE’s multi-leg conference for the RPS held this month. The RPS is a market-based policy mechanism under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 that requires load-serving entities, which includes distribution utilities and retail suppliers, to source an agreed portion of their energy supply from eligible RE facilities. Under Department Circular No. 2023-05-0015 issued in May last year, on-grid Mandated Participants are directed to increase, starting 2023, the level of #renewableenergy in their supply portfolio by 2.52% yearly from the previous 1%, which was only applicable from the years 2018 to 2022. A higher RPS percentage increment was set to help the country achieve the aspirational 35% renewable energy target share in the generation mix by 2030. Despite the shortfall, industry players are still hopeful that the RE capacities under the Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP), will bridge the REC gap commencing with an additional 0.8 million RECs by 2025 and around 3 million RECs the following year. A steady REC contribution all the way to 2030 is expected from GEAP capacities figuring at 14 million RECs to ensure fulfilling the national REC obligation that already stands at around 24 million RECs by 2030. Aside from mandating suppliers to source a big portion of their electricity supply from RE, international experiences show that enabling commercial and industrial businesses to source their supply from RE on a voluntary basis significantly helps in achieving national sustainability goals. In the Southeast Asian region, the Philippines, #Vietnam, #Singapore, and #Malaysia, have allowed retail customers to directly purchase from renewables projects for their power supply requirements. [ 🌡 #ClimateChange ] The Overlooked Role of Nitrous Oxide and Other Greenhouse Gases 🌱 Greenhouse gases (GHGs) like Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), and Nitrous Oxide (N2O) all play a significant role in climate change. While CO2 takes center stage, it's crucial to recognize that N2O is 298 times more potent than CO2 when it comes to trapping heat in our atmosphere. Even though N2O only accounts for 6% of global GHG emissions, its long atmospheric lifetime of over 100 years makes it a critical target for emission reduction. 🔬 N2O comes primarily from agriculture (fertilizers and livestock waste), wastewater treatment, and fossil fuel combustion. Meanwhile, CH4, which has 25 times the warming potential of CO2, largely originates from fossil fuels, livestock, and landfills. Despite these gases existing in smaller concentrations than CO2, they significantly amplify global warming. ⚠️ As anthropogenic N2O emissions have increased by 35% since 1980, the impact on global warming is often underestimated. It's time to focus not just on CO2 but to implement strategies that tackle the full range of GHGs, including N2O, through better nitrogen management in agriculture, wastewater treatment, and reducing fossil fuel reliance. 💡 By addressing all these gases holistically, we can strengthen our efforts in mitigating climate change. 👉 Let's focus on wastewater treatment in the next post! #GHG #Sustainability #NitrousOxide #ClimateAction #WastewaterTreatment #Agriculture

As extreme temperatures rise, so does the demand for electricity, placing immense strain on Southeast Asia’s power infrastructure. During heatwaves, the efficiency of transmission systems declines, and the output of thermal power plants, which provide most of the region’s electricity, is limited.
