  • The complex world of hydrographic surveying and importance of heritage amid urban regeneration, were on full display at two recent member engagement events in Hong Kong and China. ➡️ Members and candidates enjoyed a visit to the Government Dockyard at Stonecutter's Island in Hong Kong on 22 February, learning about the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), Hong Kong SAR Government’s hydrographic surveying unit and its new surveying vessel. The delegation gained insight into this specialised surveying field, focusing on the complexities of building infrastructure and maintaining of natural environments. Whether building bridges or cross harbour tunnels; or maintaining rivers, beaches and docks – the impact of environmental forces can make planning a challenging task. Thank you to Advisory Board member Lesly Lam for supporting the event and joining the site visit on behalf of RICS, and thank you to the CEDD, The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Land Division and RILS of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for co organising this event. ➡️ And in Mainland China, RICS and the Architecture Society of Shanghai China co-organised a site tour to the Amora Garden development on 28 February, located in the Old Town urban regeneration area in the centre of Shanghai. Over 40 members and professionals visited the site, a historic city heritage area that features innovative developments. Thank you to Site General Manager Chen Feng for sharing information on the background of the development, as delegates visited the Tongqing Guild Hall, bookstore, a long-term rental apartment, boutique hotel, and residential apartments in the area. The development aims to achieve a diverse balance of "protection and development in parallel, cultural inheritance and residential innovation, blending of history and modernity, harmony between space and ecology." We look forward to the next member engagements in region 🌏
