Azerbaijan Airlines finds an interline partner in Africa 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan's national carrier, AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines), has signed its first interline agreement with an African carrier, Ethiopian Airlines. Currently, there are no direct flights between Azerbaijan and Ethiopia. However, under this partnership agreement, AZAL and Ethiopian Airlines can now issue a single ticket and provide through baggage check-in for passengers traveling on the Baku-Addis Ababa route with connecting flights via hubs in the Middle East, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, or the Indian subcontinent. Passengers can currently make connections between AZAL and Ethiopian Airlines on this route at the following airports in these regions: Dammam (DMM) in Saudi Arabia, Dubai (DXB) in the UAE, Istanbul in Türkiye (IST and SAW), and Tel Aviv (TLV) in Israel. “Partnering with Ethiopian Airlines further strengthens AZAL’s international presence”, the Azerbaijan airline said in the statement. It carried 80% of its total passengers – almost 2.5 million to international destinations in January-September. Ethiopian Airlines becomes AZAL’s 14th interline partner. The Azerbaijani carrier also has similar agreements with Air China, Air India, Air France, Air Serbia, Delta, El Al, Emirates, Gulf Air, Hainan Airlines, KLM, Saudia, SCAT, and Uzbekistan Airways. Airports in Central Asia and the Caucasus outpaced EU gateways 🇺🇿🇦🇲🇰🇿🇬🇪 Airports in Central Asia and the Caucasus have outpaced European Union airports in terms of growth compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels. This is according to a report by the European association of airport operators, ACI Europe, which compared data from the busiest month of the year—August—between 2019 and 2024. Four countries from Central Asia and the Caucasus made it into the top five for passenger traffic growth outside the EU: Uzbekistan (+174%), Armenia (+66.8%), Kazakhstan (+54%), and Georgia (+49.8%). They were only surpassed by Albania, where passenger traffic in August rose by nearly 193% compared to the same month in 2019. The association attributed the growth in these countries to the "both the intrinsic dynamism of these national markets with the propensity to fly rising sharply along with demand from/to Russia having shifted away from the EU+ market”. EU countries showed significantly lower growth rates. The highest increases were recorded in airports in Poland (+25.5%), Luxembourg (+25.4%), and Malta (+19.4%). Meanwhile, several countries saw fewer passengers in August than in 2019. The largest declines in passenger traffic were in Finland (-27.4%), Slovenia (-21.5%), and Sweden (-21.2%).
