Recently, we cooperated in a practical experiment, where we investigated braking distance of overloaded vehicles. Main conclusion: the mass of an HGV has an enormous impact on its braking distance! The experiment was organized by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, AMZS, MAN Truck & Bus Slovenija d.o.o. and Cestel. Here's a snippet from the presentation we just had at the Slovenian congress on transport and transport infrastructure. Here are some facts from today's session titled "Freight vehicle permitting and road or bridge access regulation": 📌 Bridges represent less than 0,5% of road network millage but approximately 5% of asset value (bernard jacob) 📌 Lifespan reduction of motorways in China due to overloaded vehicles is 50% (Yi Gao) 📌 Experience from South Africa: time needed to process a vehicle at a weighbridge station is between 2,5 and 3 minutes (Jason Lowe) 📌 When it comes to bridges, it's not just about the weight of severely overloaded vehicles but also how frequently they cross the structure (Olivier Quoy, PAOLO FEDERICO) 📌 We often neglect the importance of educating drivers on the dangers of overloading (Caroline Mays, AICP) #IRF2024 #infrastructure
