Did you know it would take around 50 years to type out the entire human genome? That’s because the genome is made up of roughly 3 billion units! To put it into perspective, you’d need to type at 60 words per minute for 8 hours a day—every day—for half a century to complete the task. #DATANA #DNADataStorage #InnovationTechnology #HorizonEU #EUeic #Horizon2020

As global data generation continues to skyrocket, the environmental impact of traditional storage methods is a growing concern. Today’s data centers using traditional storage methods such as Solid-state drives (SSD’s), Hard disc drives (HDDs) and magnetic tape rely heavily on electricity and cooling systems, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. 𝗗𝗡𝗔 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 offers a more sustainable alternative. By encoding information into synthetic DNA strands, this innovative method boasts exceptionally low energy consumption for both storage and retrieval. Unlike conventional digital storage, which requires constant power, DNA storage remains stable without any maintenance or energy consumption, 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 over time. Key environmental benefits of DNA storage: • 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Once data is encoded into DNA, it requires no ongoing electricity to maintain its integrity. • 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: DNA can last for thousands of years under the right conditions, reducing the need for constant data migration, which consumes energy and resources. • 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: The ability to store massive amounts of data in an extremely small space further reduces the environmental costs of physical infrastructure. As we look to the future of data storage, sustainable solutions like DNA storage are critical for lowering our global carbon footprint. We're proud to share that in our newly equipped biotech lab, we've successfully conducted yet another test of our end-to-end DNA data storage process—error-free. This milestone demonstrates our latest engineering advancements, enhancing both writing and reading methods to deliver a more streamlined and reliable solution. For this test, we encoded something particularly meaningful: Rosalind Franklin's seminal 1953 paper on the structure of DNA. By selecting Franklin’s work, we honor her crucial contribution to molecular biology, while also demonstrating the remarkable capabilities of DNA data storage. Each successful test brings us closer to revolutionizing how the world stores digital information. As recently shared, a large percentage of human DNA is identical across all individuals. It’s the small variations that make each of us unique, influencing everything from our appearance to personality traits. Can you guess what percentage of DNA sequence variation is responsible for this uniqueness? #DATANA #DNADataStorage #EUeic #InnovationTechnology #HorizonEU #Horizon2020

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that data centers currently consume about 3% of the world's electricity, with projections suggesting this figure will double by 2030. This significant energy consumption results in high costs for data storage. In contrast, DNA as a data storage medium does not require any power or cooling systems for storage and preservation. When stored under optimal conditions, DNA can remain intact for thousands of years without the need for electricity, providing a 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. #DATANA #DNADataStorage #EUeic #HorizonEU #Horizon2020 #NextGenStorage
