EV fire in a tunnel! Recently, we challenged our Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. Model TNL280 Tunnel Nozzle against an EV fire in a tunnel fire test series at Applus+ Laboratories in Asturias, Spain. To ignite the first EV we used a customer pan burner positioned under the battery pack. Vehicles were positioned 1 m (3 ft)apart. It took more than 45 min to see the first signs of #thermalrunaway - jet flames from beneath the vehicle. Then we waited for the temperature at the ceiling to reach 68 C (155 F) before starting a 3 minute countdown to deluge system activation. The #fire grew significantly during that 3 minute period, spreading to the adjacent and downstream target vehicles. Once the deluge system was turned on, it effectively controlled and suppressed the fire as can be seen in the video. This was the last of a series of tests - we look forward to sharing the results and the report with you in the near future. Our FRISSBE interns visited Knauf Insulation Slovenija R&D facilities in Škofja Loka. Sameed Khan, Liliana Martinez, Akash Jyothivas, El Ghalia Serghini from the International Masters of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE), and Julian Cappeau from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Ingénieurs en Arts Chimiques et Technologiques, were warmly welcomed by Dr Amaya Osacar and the KI team. The visit included insightful presentations, a tour of the Knauf Insulation Slovenija Insulation Experience Center (KIEX), and an in-depth look at their state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing facilities. Our interns gained valuable knowledge on sustainable construction practices, innovative insulation solutions, and rigorous testing processes. Han Lei and Matthew Schwarzkopf, along with some InnoRenew CoE's interns from Rouen, France, visited #FRISSBE in Logatec to discuss the progress of the #WoDeFi project (Project no J4-50132). The project's goal is to apply wood thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) densification to low-value wood species to develop high-performance engineered timber products (EWPs) with enhanced mechanical and fire properties.   During the meeting, in-depth discussion were held between Lei Han, Ulises Rojas-Alva, Matthew Schwarzkopf, Nataša Knez, and Friderik Knez on the next steps to study the fire behavior of the modified wood samples. FRISSBE hosted a Research Visit and Workshop yesterday 20 of July. We welcomed three distinguished guests: Prof Xiaoyu Ju and Prof Lizhong Yang from the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, China, and Dr Yutao LI from University College London (UCL), UK. At ZAG’s main headquarters, they visited briefly the computed microtomography apparatus, the 3D printing rigs and the structure laboratory. Thanks for the courtesy of Lidija Korat and Uroš Ristić for allowing them to visit their facilities. At the fire laboratory in Logatec, they engaged in presentations and tours and shared their insights and current research activities with the #FRISSBE team. Our experts, including Prof Grunde Jomaas, Dr Aleš Jug, Dr Ulises Rojas-Alva, Friderik Knez, and Dr Urša Blumauer, PhD, also presented to them their ongoing projects and research initiatives at #FRISSBE. This exchange aims to foster a deeper understanding of fire safety engineering practices and explore potential collaborations on bilateral projects and extended research visits. We look forward to fruitful discussions and the possibility of strengthening our international research ties. This event represents a significant step towards enhancing our collaborative efforts in fire safety research and innovation.
