On 22 and 23 October 2024, meetings of the EuroGeoSurveys’ Mineral Resources Expert Group (#MREG) and the GSEU - Geological Service for Europe #RawMaterials team took place in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Klemen Teran, dr. Meta Dobnikar, and Snježana Miletić participated in the meetings. At the MREG meeting, Klemen presented the results of a study on the preparation of national research programmes in the Member States, while Meta presented the progress on establishment of the European International Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Resource Management (#EUICESRM) as part of the GSEU project. During the project meeting, Meta and Snježana chaired a session on the establishment of the EU ICE SRM and presented a proposal for an IT platform to support the work of the centre. The partners also discussed the EU ICE SRM work programme for 2025. Many thanks to LNEG, the Geological Survey of Portugal, for the great organisation and hospitality!
About us
The Geological Survey of Slovenia (Geološki zavod Slovenije - GeoZS) is a multidisciplinary public research institute that operates in various fields of geoscience and conducts basic research and applied activities in Slovenia and abroad, as well as public services in support of the operation of the Republic of Slovenia and the European Union. The GeoZS acquires, stores, interprets and makes available geological data required by the state and society. We are engaged in research on both national and international levels and cooperate with similar organisations in Slovenia and abroad. The GeoZS takes an active part in various EU programmes focused on sustainable living, climate action, as well as efficient and sustainable use of resources and raw materials. We work hard to provide universal accessibility and application of expert knowledge in the society and the economy, transfer research results into practical application, popularise science, spread scientific culture, and raise public awareness. The GeoZS aims for its name to become synonymous with the knowledge of everything that can be found beneath the Earth’s surface. While our top priority is research, we are also creating an environment that will allow efficient transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice, both in Slovenia and abroad. In the long run, three research programmes will continue to form the core of our research: Regional Geology, Groundwater & Geochemistry, and Mineral Resources.

🌍 Kashif Shamsher, a student of the TIMREX MSc in Mineral Exploration Master’s programme, completed a one-month internship at GeoZS in September under the supervision of dr Meta Dobnikar and dr Klemen Teran. Kashif holds a Bachelor's degree in Geology from Karakoram International University in Pakistan. Kashif worked closely with the Regional Geology department and gained hands-on experience with advanced equipment, including an SEM and our newly acquired Raman spectrometer. Despite the rainy weather, he had the opportunity to participate in field work and collaborate with experts in mineral resources, geophysics and geoinformatics. The internship was conducted as part of the RIS-Internship program funded by EIT RawMaterials.
