The #SOCIALNRG project just kicked off in Mechelen, Belgium, where partners from Belgium, Italy, and Slovenia gathered to tackle #EnergyPoverty through the power of energy communities. 💡 During two days of collaboration, site visits, and goal-setting, we discussed innovative ways to support energy-poor households with sustainable solutions. IRI UL leads activities within the project focused on engaging households, co-creation processes, and validating project solutions! 🏘️✨ It's important to involve people in the development of project solutions, especially those who can be classified as energy poor. 👥💪 At the kickoff meeting, IRI UL laid a solid foundation for the continued development of the project and aligned our common goals on the path to addressing energy poverty in Europe. Jambo from Wote, Kenya! This was my third visit to the Eastern Africa region and my second time in Kenya. Over five intensive days of fieldwork and workshops, I had the privilege of collaborating with dear colleagues from universities across Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and Benin. Together, we explored curriculum enrichment and Real-life Learning Lab implementation, gaining valuable insights into the current progress and future prospects of these initiatives within local university contexts. What made my trip even more enriching was visiting the remote Kyavonda community. Experiencing their way of life and witnessing the everyday struggles they face, i.e., the challenges that have become so distant from our own realities. I highly recommend watching the documentary Thank You for the Rain (https://lnkd.in/ebUKg9Hr), which tells the powerful story of Kisilu Musya, a farmer from the Kyavonda community, whom I had the privilege to collaborate with during the past five days. The film captures his journey from hardship to empowerment in the face of the rapidly changing climate affecting his home. Beyond the regular work, we also shared special moments—telling stories, laughing, offering positive critiques 😊, enjoying delicious Kenyan food, commuting on local buses, and traditional dancing. One experience I’ll never forget is planting my very own tree (the bottle brush), marked with a sign explaining who planted it, why, and when. I can’t wait to return one day with my children (or maybe even grandchildren!) to see how the tree has grown and how the surroundings have transformed. The whole initiative was supported by the INSSPIRE project, Aurora Universities initiative, and South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) Network. A huge thank you to the INSSPIRE project coordinators, Sabina Di Prima and Denyse Snelder for their leadership and support in making this a reality. At the 6th International Conference on Smart Systems and Technologies (#SST 2024) in Osijek, Croatia, #SynGRID led a special #session on innovative solutions for low-voltage grid management. 🔌⚡ The session tackled the critical challenges of integrating #flexibility into modern power grids to support Europe’s energy transition. Drawing insights from SynGRID’s research and key #EUprojects like X- FLEX, Compile Project, OPENTUNITY project, and Stream_HE project, we highlighted strategies to boost grid stability, reduce imbalances, and empower energy communities. One standout example was the Luče pilot in Slovenia, which demonstrated how local markets can play a key role in managing flexibility. ⚡🌍 Beyond our session, the SST 2024 conference provided a platform to explore the latest advancements in smart grids, AI, and energy system digitalization, bringing together global experts working towards a sustainable energy future 💡. 🌱 Highlighting Our Visit to Mlekarna Planika ! 🌱 As part of our 2nd Consortium meeting for the EENOVA project, we had the pleasure of visiting Dairy Planika, a key company involved in our mission to enhance sustainability in the food chain. 🧀🥛 Planika is integral to EENOVA’s efforts to address the high reliance of the food sector on fossil fuels by embracing energy-smart solutions. Focused on improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of renewable energy, Planika is helping to transform the dairy value chain in Western Slovenia 🇸🇮 towards a greener future. The EENOVA project, co-funded by the European Union's LIFE Programme, is reducing the carbon intensity of five food processing subsectors across Europe, with Planika being a key contributor to the dairy sector. Their involvement underscores the importance of energy transition in food processing industries.
