🌐 Despite being a component/catalyst producer in a complex #fuelcell value chain, we look at the impacts of our product in a #holistic manner. From the fine details of the #nanoparticles to the structure of the #carbon support, but also how our customers use the catalysts to fabricate and assemble #hydrogen #fuelcells and also, how the fuel cells will then be in the end operated in the actual vehicles. 🤝 Saying this, we are happy to announce that our platinum-alloy intermetallic catalysts have contributed to a joint peer-reviewed study published in the reputable American Chemical Society Energy Letters (Impact Factor 22) > https://lnkd.in/dU49YUp7 The study was led by ESRF - The European Synchrotron as well as Johnson Matthey with additional contributions coming also from ReCatalyst as well as other public research organizations such as Technische Universitt Berlin led by renowned prof. Dr. Peter Strasser as well as Kemijski inštitut - National Institute of Chemistry led by prof. Dr. Nejc Hodnik among also others. 💡The study covers the so far widely overlooked topic of platinum-nanoalloy #catalyst degradation during Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) fabrication. In other words, for the most part, when we talk about aging of fuel cells, we think about their operation. However, the study reveals that it is important to consider also all the steps before we actually first start operating the fuel cell. This is especially important when integrating next-gen platinum-based catalysts in MEAs where on one end, we as ReCatalyst are able to adapt the production of our catalysts to make our products more robust for the fabrication of fuel cells, but even more importantly, the study provides critical guidelines to the companies making the catalyst inks and fabricating MEAs to minimize or even prevent the degradation of MEA components including the fuel cell catalyst prior to fuel cell operation. Additionally, considerations can be made on how this can also be applicable for fuel cell stack producers for designing of the so-called 'break-in' or 'conditioning' of the stack by inducing unwanted processes. For a deep-dive on this topic, however, we invite you to take a look at a very recently published review as well > https://lnkd.in/dUbGeDcR Interested to learn more about this study as well as our products? Today our CEO Tomaz Bizjak represented ReCatalyst at the #ChemistryPitchDay organized by HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds & Chemie-Cluster Bayern GmbH in Nüremberg, Germany. ReCatalyst has been selected as one of the 10 startups to pitch their #green chemistry and #sustainable material innovations in front of more than 80 participants from industry and #venture capital. #fuelcells #hydrogen #platinum #catalysts
🧪 This year's Chemistry Pitch Day in Nuremberg, organized by Chemie-Cluster Bayern GmbH and HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds, is already in full swing! 👇 Earlier this morning we heard about Sustainable Chemistry in Bavaria from Dr. Roland Appel, representing the German Chemical Industry Association VCI in Bavaria, Dr. Christian Geltinger (Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie)and Dr. Laura Lautenschlägeräger (BioCampus Straubing GmbH). ⚡ Then we saw the first three pitches of the day, focussing on electro chemistry. 1️⃣ Tomaz Bizjak presented ReCatalyst. This hydrogen tech start-up from Slovenia is working on solutions to optimize the use of scarce and expensive precious metals in fuel cell and water electrolysis applications. 2️⃣ ionysis GmbH brings innovative electro-chemistry for hydrogen applications to market. Lisa Langer pitched ionysis' approach to replace fluorinated materials with innovative hydrocarbon (HC) materials to unlock technological advantages, improve sustainability and reduce costs. 3️⃣ Up next was Arne Birth pitching elementarhy. This start-up provides costs efficient and scalable electro-chemical solutions to supply the hydrogen industry and live in a zero-emission society. 🤩 There are seven more pitches to come and, of course, plenty of networking! 🚀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐅𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭! 🚀 We are very excited to announce our latest fuel cell catalyst product innovations based on a highly accessible ‘mesoporous carbon’ supports, with significant promise in the initial fuel cell tests - which will be part of our upcoming communication. Porous carbons have already been used as catalyst support materials for a while. However, the platinum-based nanoparticles located in the so-called micropores had accessibility issues, resulting in transport issues within the catalyst layer and thus, a negative impact on the fuel cell performance. In 2021, Toyota released their 2nd generation and their first mass production #hydrogen #fuelcell vehicle Mirai. One of the key innovations already integrated in Toyota’s 2nd generation Mirai has also been the introduction of a platinum-cobalt catalyst on a so-called ‘mesoporous’ carbon support. Mesopores are by definition larger in size in comparison to micropores, enabling improved transport properties and thus, improved fuel cell performance resulting from the higher accessibility of platinum-based nanoparticles for reactants. ReCatalyst's development is aligned with its mission to optimize the use of precious metals in the fuel cell applications. We recognize the importance of the next-generation 'mesoporous' carbon materials to achieve this mission and have worked hard to develop our latest product #innovation and start offering it to the #market. #Decarbonization #Nanotech #Electrocatalysts #EnergyInnovation #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #RenewableTech #CatalystDevelopment #startup #Sustainability #innovation

The #journey from being a researcher to becoming a deep-tech start-up founder of ReCatalyst has so far been an incredible, but also incredibly challenging experience. Since we've successfully closed our oversubscribed Seed round as well as kicked-off our European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) #Transition project #ENABLER, we've built a great new catalyst product, a great team, are working with the most amazing companies in the PEM fuel cell value chain, are working on the adaptations at ReCatalyst's new location - and all of this still only really scratches the surface. Every day of the week is full of surprises, unexpected problem solving, long working days and also many weekends, unpredictability and often also a wide variety of completely new and in many ways high stress situations. To manage all of this, it is highly important to nevertheless have ''counterweights'' as part of your lifestyle - opportunities to unwind, forget about all the work for at least a few hours, but at the same time maintain a strong mind and healthy body. For myself, one of such ''counterweights'' is sports climbing and more particularly a sub-category that is called bouldering. I can most certainly attribute at least part of the reason on why I've got into climbing 5 years ago to the huge success and increase in popularity of Slovenian sports climbing where despite being an only 2 M population country, Slovenia is at the very top of the world, including not one, but two gold medals achieved by the #GOAT janja garnbret at the Olympics. Bouldering in many ways suits me also because at the core of it, every boulder is a 'problem', which means you need to use not only your body, but also your mind to find a solution, find the hidden details and how the climbers like to call it, find the 'beta' to get to the 'top' in the most efficient way possible. And even though I'm again solving problems like I do at ReCatalyst every single day, this problem solving is nothing but enjoyable, mind clearing and highly rewarding activity. Even if I have been working for 12 hours, I try to still squeeze at least an hour long bouldering session a few times per week, even if I'm traveling for work, I always scout for climbing gyms closest to my hotel and I do that with no compromise. I strongly believe every person needs to find their own healthy ''counterweights'' and I'm very happy that I've found mine. #problemsolving #PEMFC #FuelCells #Innovation #TechEu #HydrogenEconomy #Technology #FuelCellTechnology #StartUpExperience #StartUpJourney #Sustainability
