🚁⚙️ Blast from the Past: Series 3 - Leonardo’s Lift-Off Vision🚀 Welcome back to Blast from the Past! 👀 This time, we’re rewinding to 1500 AD, where the legendary Leonardo da Vinci—a true Renaissance genius and the “Father of the Modern Bearing” —sketched an engineering marvel that still impacts us today. Leonardo’s aerial screw design wasn’t just an early concept of flight; it introduced a revolutionary bearing structure that’s strikingly similar to modern designs. His innovative sketch included two rings, or races, with rolling balls in between, held together by a cage to prevent contact and reduce friction. This cage kept everything running smoothly—a principle that powers today’s machinery, from cars to aircraft. ✈️🚗 Want to check out these legendary drawings for yourself? You can find them at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan—a must-see for anyone inspired by his vision! 🖼️ Though his aerial screw didn’t lift off, Leonardo’s bearing concept soared beyond his era. His vision laid the groundwork for bearings to become an engineering staple, truly taking off during the Industrial Revolution. 🌎 Today, his relentless curiosity still inspires us to push boundaries in every field. 💡 And the innovation didn’t stop there! 🚢⚙️ Blast from the Past: Series 2 - Roman Engineering Beneath the Waves Welcome back to our Blast from the Past series! 👀 This time, we dive deep into Lake Nemi, Italy, to uncover a remarkable innovation that changed the course of engineering: the Roman ball bearing! In 40 BC, Roman engineers were already ahead of their time. Among the treasures found on a sunken Roman ship, archaeologists uncovered a wooden ball bearing—a testament to ancient Roman ingenuity. This simple yet brilliant mechanism supported a rotating platform or table aboard the vessel, reducing friction and allowing smoother movement. Whether for adjusting navigational tools or serving food, this technology was essential for making life easier aboard these grand ships. These were no ordinary ships, though. Known as the Nemi Ships and built for Emperor Caligula, they were essentially floating palaces, featuring intricate mosaics, baths, and even plumbing systems! Imagine the complexity of keeping such a massive vessel in motion. The ball bearing, though rudimentary, played a key role in reducing mechanical strain—foreshadowing the precision engineering we rely on today. It’s fascinating to think that the same principles the Romans used to reduce friction and improve motion are still at the core of modern technologies, from wind turbines to cranes, radars, and even robotics. Whether made from wood or high-tech alloys, bearings have powered human innovation for millennia. From ancient Roman shipbuilding to the precision bearings that keep the world turning today, this story is a testament to our relentless drive to innovate and push boundaries. 🌍🔧 But we’re just getting started! 🤩 In Series 3, we’ll leap forward in time to explore another revolutionary design that inspired one of the most groundbreaking inventions of the modern era. Have you heard about Leonardo da Vinci’s early concept of a helicopter? Blast from the Past: Series 1 - The Ancient Origins of Modern Bearings Did you know that bearings may have played a key role in the construction of the Great Pyramids of Egypt? 🏗️ The ancient Egyptians are believed to have used primitive wooden roller bearings —logs placed under immense stone blocks, some weighing up to 2.5 tons (roughly the size and weight of an SUV)—to reduce friction and make the transportation of these massive stones possible. But that’s not all! Some of the larger granite blocks used in the inner chambers of the pyramids could weigh as much as 80 tons 🫨 (80,000 kg)—the weight of about 15 elephants! These colossal stones were transported from quarries located several kilometers away. Without their early use of bearing-like technology, moving and positioning such enormous stones would have been nearly impossible. Bearings, in various forms, have been at the heart of human innovation for millennia. For example, archaeologists have discovered traces of early bearing systems in Greek and Roman architecture and engineering. It’s incredible to reflect on how far we've come—from ancient methods to high-performance precision bearings that enable everything from industrial machinery to electric vehicles🚗💡. But the connection between bearings and ancient technology doesn’t end in Egypt! 🌊 Have you heard of the Sunken Roman ships discovered in Lake Nemi, Italy? 👀👀 Stay tuned for Series 2 👀😉 as we explore more fascinating stories about the role of bearings in shaping human history!
