🎉 The 1st SMASHING workshop has officially come to a close! We were proud to host 78 international researchers and experts, working on cutting-edge AI and machine learning applications across sciences and the humanities. Participants came from 15 European countries (Slovenia, Germany, Austria, France, UK, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Netherlands, Switzerland, Estonia) as well as the USA, Pakistan, and India. We’re excited that our workshop coincided with the awarding of two Nobel Prizes for the first time in artificial intelligence and machine learning—fields that are at the heart of the SMASH project and were thoroughly explored in our discussions. Fun fact: We also had lecturers from institutions associated with Nobel laureates, including DeepMind and the University of Washington. 🙌 A big thank you to all participants and everyone who helped make this conference possible! 📷 Stay tuned for photo galleries and recordings of the talks! #SMASH #postdoc

I had fun yesterday at SMASH msca workshop at Vipava (Slovenia), where I gave a talk on “Persistent Topological Features in Large Language Models” soon to appear on the arXiv with Alberto Cazzaniga and Alessio Ansuini and students Yuri Gardinazzi, Giada Panerai and Karthik Viswanathan, work done at Area Science Park.  To take a break from the talks, yesterday's SMASHING workshop took us on an exciting excursion through the beautiful Vipava Valley! We enjoyed wine tasting in Planina, explored the rich history from ancient times to the medieval period, through the Napoleonic era, and all the way to Slovenia’s independence, while visiting Vipavski Križ and Ajdovščina. Day 2 of the SMASHING workshop concluded with a dynamic public panel on "The Impact of AI on Science and Society", held on the same day that AI pioneers John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their groundbreaking contributions to machine learning. 🏆 The panel explored AI applications that have been in use for years, and examined the effects of AI's growing popularization, the privatization of tools, the importance of data quality in AI models, and the potential risks and challenges AI poses to society.
