Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe

About us

FOREST EUROPE (Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe) is the pan-European policy process for sustainable management of the continent’s forests. FOREST EUROPE, founded in 1990, develops common strategies for its 45 member countries and the EU on how to protect and sustainably manage forests. FOREST EUROPE mission is to enhance the cooperation on forest policies in Europe under the leadership of ministers, and to secure and promote Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) with the aim of maintaining the multiple functions of forests crucial to society. The signatories of FOREST EUROPE share a vision: "A future where all European forests are vital, productive and multifunctional. Where forests contribute effectively to sustainable development, through ensuring human well-being, a healthy environment and economic development in Europe and across the globe. Where the forests’ unique potential to support a green economy, livelihoods, climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, enhancing water quality and combating desertification is realized to benefit society." Sustainable Forest Management is crucial for sufficient and sustainable supply of timber products, renewable energy, good quality fresh water and climate change mitigation in Europe and the rest of the world.

🌲 During panel three at the 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, signatories and observers endorsed the Bonn Ministerial Decision and the creation of the Forest Risk Facility (FoRISK). 🔑 A key takeaway was the need to rethink and adapt strategies and approaches to maintain and enhance the resilience of #forests, landscapes, and society to the ever-increasing risks that #climatechange, the #biodiversity crisis, but also, e.g., land degradation and desertification pose for European forests. 🌍 Strengthening synergies across borders and sectors and committing to transboundary Sustainable Forest Management will enhance forest #resilience and secure the future of our forests. #9MC #FutureForests

[FOREST EUROPE]   🌲 🌳 Beginning of October, CEI-Bois was present at the 9th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Bonn 🌳🌲 On that occasion, our Secretary General, Silvia Melegari, stressed that “Contrary to misperceptions, harvesting a renewable resource like wood is good for forests. It ensures they are well looked after, helps them to adapt to the climate of the future, and increases their value to society.” FOREST EUROPE not only sets the definition for SFM in Europe but also ensures that this important, dynamic concept continues to develop. This includes revising the criteria and indicators for SFM on a scientific basis in order to keep the monitoring and reporting on SFM targeted and adapted to the challenges of our time and to support decision-making in forest policy.

🌍 Are European forests fit for a sustainable future? 🌍 Criterion 3: Maintenance and Encouragement of Productive Functions of Forests (Wood and Non-Wood) Large-scale #ForestDamage has severe market and ecological consequences. Salvage harvests during #NaturalDisasters not only raise ecological concerns but also push down wood prices, affecting forest owners' livelihoods. In the face of these challenges, how can we ensure a stable supply of wood, especially for innovative and long-lived wood products, while maintaining sustainable management? As global competition intensifies, we also need a level playing field that allows European #timber producers to remain competitive without compromising on #sustainability criteria. 🔑 Key Policy Questions: 🤔 How to reduce market disruption due to large-scale forest damage? 🤔 How to ensure a reliable wood supply suited to innovative products based on wood from European forests? 🤔 What measures should be implemented to ensure a level playing field on global markets for wood and products from Europe and from other regions? Explore these critical questions in our new report, Are European Forests Fit for a Sustainable Future? - A short story about European forests. Read the report here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e2ucse-n

🌍 Listening to the speakers of the second panel of the 9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, we gained valuable insights into the implementation measures for sustainable #forest management (SFM) at a national level. 🌲 FOREST EUROPE not only sets the definition for SFM in Europe but also ensures that this important, dynamic concept continues to develop. This includes revising the criteria and indicators for SFM on a scientific basis in order to keep the monitoring and reporting on SFM targeted and adapted to the challenges of our time and to support decision-making in forest #policy. 🔑 FOREST EUROPE thrives on the political and personal commitment and dedication of its signatories and observers to contribute our best knowledge and to maximize the impact of our joint work. #9MC #FutureForests

9th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference 2024 in Bonn, Petersberg: Statement from #SDWBundesverband presented by #ChristophRullmann, Managing Director of SDW, as observer of the process: The German Association for the Protection of Forests is an environmental NGO with 25.000 members in Germany who focus on the protection of forests and promoting sustainable forest management.   We aim to increase forest cover and biodiversity of forests in Germany, while advocating for sustainable use of forests and timber. Our main work includes a broad educational portfolio of forest-based education for sustainable development, we call it Forest ESD.   We strongly believe that forest ESD plays a key role in forest protection and its sustainable management. Only through a diverse program of forest pedagogics for all age groups can the significance of forests and their benefits be promoted in society.      We therefore strongly support the §18 of the Bonn Ministerial Declaration and support IFSA in their aim to foster engagement of young people and especially young professionals in all related processes for forests. At the European Forest Education Conference in Bonn in September 2023, forest, and education experts from 25 countries reaffirmed their call for Forest ESD to be more firmly anchored and promoted at the European level. Forest ESD should be offered to everybody on a continuous and lifelong basis. It should include all forest benefits, such as timber production, biodiversity conservation, recreation, cultural enrichment and well-being. Forest ESD is a cross-sectoral task and should also be the responsibility of all European forestry and agriculture ministries. In so being, it needs partnerships between national and municipal forestry organizations, forest owners and all other organizations engaged in forest.   We therefore would welcome if Forest Europe, under the Chairmanship of Sweden, were to address the importance and the integration of forest pedagogics for the whole of society as a pillar of sustainable forest management and forest protection.   We would like to warmly thank the German chairmanship and the team around Thomas Hausmann for their work and the support in the last years. #CemÖzdemir Bundesminister für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft, #UrsulaHeinenEsser SDW-Präsidentin, #GeorgSchirmbeck Präsident des Deutschen Forstwirtschaftsrates, #DanielHartmann Forstchef NRW, #BNE, #Waldschutz

🌍 Are European forests fit for a sustainable future? 🌍  Criterion 2: Maintenance of Forest Ecosystem Health and Vitality #ClimateChange is reshaping European #forests, threatening their health and #resilience. Forests face rising damage from both biotic and abiotic factors, which poses a significant challenge to their long-term vitality. To safeguard #ForestEcosystems, we must act now, employing adaptive management strategies that anticipate future climate conditions. But how do we ensure these strategies are in place, especially for smaller forest owners who lack resources? 🔑 Key Policy Questions:  🤔 What is the best strategy to improve the resilience of European forests faced with climate change?  🤔 How can policymakers best promote and support adaptive forest management?  🤔 Explore these critical questions in our new report, Are European Forests Fit for a Sustainable Future? - A short story about European forests.
