Gender-based violence fueled by technology: Highlights from TrollWall AI’s participation at the United Nations General Assembly In partnership with Apolitical Foundation, our Co-Founder and CEO Tomáš Halász had the pleasure to represent TrollWall AI in a week of fruitful events, in conjunction with the 79th United Nations General Assembly, from 10 - 28 September in New York City. While the global leaders met at the UN to confront yet another year of complex crises and conflicts in the dividing world we are living in, we were on the mission to learn and tackle the growing concern of online hate - particularly among female figures. Throughout a series of memorable events, it was shocking, but not surprising to learn that female figures across industries and countries consistently suffer from online violence. Female activists, journalists, politicians are the ongoing targets of misogynic comments, death and rape threats, deep fakes and disinformation, just to silence their voices. One of them is Julie Inman - Grant, Australian eSafety Commissioner, whose journey in fighting for a safer space in social media, to the extent of suing X (formerly known as Twitter), led to receiving death threats and even had her children’s private information exposed through doxing. As well as JAHA DUKUREH, activist and founder of Safe Hands for Girls and a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, who relentlessly fight against female genital mutilation worldwide. Her tireless work to protect and uplift women and girls across Africa is truly inspiring. Learning about her experience of online violence and disinformation which resulted in moving her family out of the country was heartbreaking. Online violence is indeed a growing global issue, and we were honoured to meet and learn from fellow female leaders such as Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, on how can play our parts to tackle this pressing issue together. Being present at the official launch event for a new ground-breaking EU-UN Women initiative: Advocacy, Coalition Building and Transformative Feminist Action to End Violence against Women Programme (ACT to end violence against women) also gave us a glimpse of positivity in tackling this issue. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Apolitical Foundation team: Lisa Witter, Suki Capobianco and Cäcilia Riederer for the unwavering support throughout the week and TrollWall AI is truly proud to be part of the solution to the growing online hate.
