About us

TrustAfrica is not just a new Foundation. It is a new kind of Foundation, led by Africans with a devotion to inclusive dialogue. TrustAfrica brings a pioneering approach to development and philanthropy in Africa. These are some of qualities that set us apart: TrustAfrica is an African institution: • We are rooted in the continent unlike most donors. From our headquarters in Dakar, we have a prime vantage on the challenges and opportunities facing Africa. • We are led by Africans. Our trustees and staff, recruited throughout Africa and abroad, share extensive experience in development and philanthropy and an unwavering commitment to good governance. • We are building a broad base of support. Our $100-per-year campaign is generating a groundswell of enthusiasm among Africans living on the continent and in the diaspora. TrustAfrica helps Africans set the agenda for development: • We do not take our cues from external donors, nor do we push an agenda of our own making. Instead, we host workshops that allow leading figures from across the continent to shape our program strategy by identifying needs, setting priorities, crafting solutions, and making recommendations for funding. • Our workshops have drawn hundreds of visionary scholars, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, and policy makers from across Africa and throughout the diaspora. We’ve already given more than US$5.3 million to support dozens of projects that grew out of these dialogues. These initiatives are more likely to win acceptance and make a lasting impact than ready-made responses imposed from elsewhere.

On October 7, 2024, Trust Africa played an instrumental role in two key events designed to address the challenges and opportunities facing democratic governance in West Africa: the West Africa Democracy Roundtable and the West Africa Democracy Fund Launch. These events brought together leading voices from civil society, regional organizations, and foundations to discuss pressing issues like institutional fragility, youth engagement, and the role of technology in political processes. The discussions explored concrete solutions for strengthening democracy in the region and highlighted the importance of youth and women as critical agents of change. Participation at the West Africa Democracy Roundtable The West Africa Democracy Roundtable provided a platform for in-depth dialogue on the state of democracy in the region. During the roundtable, Dr. Sall delivered the closing remarks, synthesizing the key themes discussed throughout the event. He began by emphasizing the importance of democracy as a legacy deeply rooted in Africa’s history. Dr. Sall referenced the 13th-century Mandate Charter to remind participants that democracy is not a foreign import but part of the continent’s governance traditions, and that it must be both protected and cherished. Panel Discussion at the West Africa Democracy Fund Launch Later in the day, Dr. Sall participated in a panel discussion during the launch of the West Africa Democracy Fund. This fund was established to address the democratic challenges facing the region, and the panel provided a platform for thought leaders to share their perspectives on how to sustain democratic governance in West Africa. In response to the panel’s central question—“Where do you see hope for democracy in West Africa?”—Dr. Sall focused on the importance of youth and women as key drivers of democratic renewal. He pointed to the example of Senegal, where youth have effectively organized and mobilized to hold leaders accountable and demand systemic reforms, demonstrating that this demographic holds the key to the future of democracy.

🎺 🎺 Join us! as we commemorate World Cotton Day tomorrow in Zambia under the theme “Empowering Communities through Sustainable Cotton Farming”. The main objectives of these celebrations are to promote sustainable cotton practices, strengthen stakeholder collaboration by bringing together local leaders, farmers, government officials, and investors to foster cooperation in the cotton sector, empower smallholder farmers by sharing knowledge and innovations that improve yields, productivity, and market access, and recognise the vital contribution of female cotton farmers and extension officers. During the celebrations, the locals will also showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Eastern Province through performances, traditional customs, and exhibitions, emphasizing the role of cotton in the community's livelihood. #RECLAIMSustainability! #Cottonprices #Marketaccess #cottonfarming #cottonforgood

TrustAfrica in collaboration with SOUTHERN AFRICA RESOURCE WATCH in collaboration with Solidaridad East and Central Africa are excited to co-host a 1-day national policy dialogue and validation workshop on the Domestication of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV): The case of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining in Kenya. The discussions are meant to unpack the findings of a national study conducted by TrustAfrica and Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) to examine the status of AMV domestication in national mining policies in Kenya with a particular focus on Artisanal and Small-scale Mining Sector. In Kenya gross domestic product (GDP) was nearly $88 billion in 2018. At the time, Mining and quarrying accounted for about 0.8 percent of the GDP. Kenya has not been considered a particularly mineral-rich country, but recent geological surveys have indicated that this assumption may have underestimated the available resource. Gold is mainly found in the Western part of the country.#ReclaimSustainability #AMV #AfricanMiningVision Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Solidaridad Network #AMDC
