About us

TrustAfrica is not just a new Foundation. It is a new kind of Foundation, led by Africans with a devotion to inclusive dialogue. TrustAfrica brings a pioneering approach to development and philanthropy in Africa. These are some of qualities that set us apart: TrustAfrica is an African institution: • We are rooted in the continent unlike most donors. From our headquarters in Dakar, we have a prime vantage on the challenges and opportunities facing Africa. • We are led by Africans. Our trustees and staff, recruited throughout Africa and abroad, share extensive experience in development and philanthropy and an unwavering commitment to good governance. • We are building a broad base of support. Our $100-per-year campaign is generating a groundswell of enthusiasm among Africans living on the continent and in the diaspora. TrustAfrica helps Africans set the agenda for development: • We do not take our cues from external donors, nor do we push an agenda of our own making. Instead, we host workshops that allow leading figures from across the continent to shape our program strategy by identifying needs, setting priorities, crafting solutions, and making recommendations for funding. • Our workshops have drawn hundreds of visionary scholars, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, and policy makers from across Africa and throughout the diaspora. We’ve already given more than US$5.3 million to support dozens of projects that grew out of these dialogues. These initiatives are more likely to win acceptance and make a lasting impact than ready-made responses imposed from elsewhere.

She highlights the importance of intersectionality and inclusivity in movement-building, emphasizing that "our movements must rotate in intersectionality, inclusivity, and collectivity. The call in this time is to prioritize the voices of those most affected by injustice, including women, young people, and marginalized communities. If we leave those voices out, the building blocks of our movements will be shaky, and we will not succeed." The 3rd African Social Movements Baraza, taking place in Accra, Ghana, will be a critical space for us to build this unity and solidarity. It’s a moment to amplify grassroots strategies, share best practices, and strengthen our collective power. Let’s honour the work of grassroots organizers and join hands to build a future where African movements lead the way in shaping a just and equitable world. As we stand at the crossroads of history, the actions we take in this moment will determine the future of our continent for generations to come. The 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗮 will be a critical space for us to come together, share strategies, and build the solidarity needed to confront these challenges. It’s not just a meeting – it’s a movement-building process that will echo in our local, national, and regional spaces long after we leave the convening. As Phumi so eloquently put it, "The struggle is on, and it will continue. We have so many challenges that this world is faced with, and movements are the power. They have the power, and they need to be empowered even more." Let’s rise to this moment. Let’s show up for each other, for our communities, and for the future of our continent. Join us to build a stronger, more united continent. • In Memory of Everjoice Win: A Feminist Leader and Champion for Social Justice It is with profound sadness that we grieve the passing away of our beloved comrade and sister, Everjoice Win, affectionately known as “EJ,” a formidable feminist and social justice leader. EJ’s unwavering commitment to gender justice and human rights has left an indelible mark and will continue to stand as an inspiration to us all. Her dynamic presence and insightful contributions were instrumental in shaping the discourse at the African Philanthropy Conferences and the African Social Movements Barazas hosted by TrustAfrica, where she captivated audiences with her brilliance and wit. Her ability to articulate complex issues with clarity and passion inspired many and fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the realm of social justice. Her legacy is one of courage, intellect, wit and an unyielding dedication to the causes she championed. As we mourn the loss of a cherished friend and ally, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. • Honored to Welcome Dr. Natalia Kanem! We were thrilled to host Dr. Natalia Kanem, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNFPA, at our strategic retreat in Saly. As one of the founders and a former board member of TrustAfrica, Dr. Kanem's visit came at a crucial time as we were planning our next strategic cycle. Her highly inspiring words strengthened our commitment to keep the health and wellbeing of young girls of Africa among our top priorities. Dr. Kanem highlighted the essential role they play in keeping families, communities, and the world going. They must be at the core of all strategies aimed at shaping the future we want for Africa. Let's continue to champion the well-being and empowerment of young girls across the continent.
