Big news as we kick off November! We're excited to share that we are currently running three innovation challenges across the region that we’ll be sharing over the course of the week. First up—Somalia! 🌍 In partnership with Response Innovation Lab, WFP Somalia launched the first IGNITE Food Systems Challenge, aimed at finding impactful solutions to address food system challenges and improve the efficiency of aid programmes across the country. From over 100 applications, 12 ventures pitched their solutions, and five were selected to join the acceleration phase. Over the next three months, The KCG, Greenlife Agribusiness LTD, Ruman Integrated Organic Farm, SomFarm Fresh, RAAS Agribusiness Solution will receive financial and technical support to scale their innovative solutions. None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. The Somali Resilience Program is thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation #SDC funded project being implemented by our partners CARE, Shaqodoon Organization, COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale, Action Against Hunger | ACF-USA and Oxfam Somali. This new phase seeks to intensify efforts made under the previous phases by continuing to work with communities to sustain resilience gains and further strengthen their resilience to shocks. The proposed interventions will concentrate on strengthening livelihood and economic development activities (VSLAs), enhancing agricultural production, and boosting livestock production for a lasting impact

‘Qayb Ka Ahow Horumarinta Deegankaga’ Today, we’re raising funds for #Qoyta focused on constructing a flood protection gate. Day 2 at #MSS2024: I enjoyed the #privatesector voices in the morning. Some key points included: - social inequality is a massive risk in a banking institution - trust matters above all - be careful about trapping a small player in one value chain - it’s a discipline to learn how to tell the stories even if the outcomes aren’t perfect - find stories that capture the journey It’s remarkable that these private sector voices have such similar conclusions and needs as #marketsystems practitioners. Then there was a banging conversation on market systems #resilience and #crisis that left me with pages of quotables. Here’s a few: - Peter Saling - the definition of crisis is the elimination of choices. A single choice is a choke point that can shut down chunks of a system. 👊 - Kseniya Sydorkina, PMP - (in response to John Rachkara’s observation about the risk of being at the pilot phase forever) Don’t overlook the methodical spotting for scale. You need to know when to pull back support to not kill the market from scaling something. 🥰 - Dun Grover - If social and government systems fail to co-evolve with economic change, it drives #instability and #conflict. 💯 - Nishant Das - The issue to finding solutions is lack of consensus on what the problem is. 🙌 - Nandi Hall - Ongoing understanding at a hyper local level is more useful than large analytical exercises. 👍 - I didn’t catch the name, but someone from GOAL Global in the audience - If we define #humanitarian crisis as a collapse of local system functioning, it changes the focus of the response. 🧐 The afternoon was packed with awesome Tool Clinics. Feed the Future Market Systems and Partnerships shined. Thanks Ryan Bourque for sharing the market systems analysis toolkit, Dun Grover and Mike Field (Vikāra Institute) for getting feedback on the principles for facilitation for upcoming guidance, Jennifer King (MarketShare Associates) for amplifying the women-inclusive ROI framework, and Nathan Hulley for championing the #climate #adaptation fund assessment framework and scorecard. So much great work! (Let us know if you want to know more about any of these). Plus a bunch of other great tools were shared from a variety of organizations. 🎉🎉🎉 And the day ended with a wonderful debate, expertly provoked by Luis E. (Lucho) Osorio-Cortes. Participants shared thoughts on whether #localization is just window dressing or real change. I think there was broad consensus that it depends on many factors. Among those is how local systems are engaged. The sentiment that locally-led development matters above all also seemed widely shared. 🙌 However, I also took away that USAID needs to do some better communicating about our current vision for this because most people still think localization means direct awards to local partners. 😬Sarah Ellison time to have lunch again!
