India's Kidambi Srikanth survived a scare but managed to advance to the China Open badminton quarterfinals after beating Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto 10-21, 21-9, 21-9 in their pre-quarterfinal match on Thursday.
Meanwhile, P.V. Sindhu beat Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-12, 21-15.
Sugiarto breezed through the first game 21-10 but Srikanth upped the ante and raced to 11-6 lead in the second. He maintained the good work all thought the game and forced the decider with a 21-9 win.
The decider, too, seemed to go Srikanth's way as he took the early lead at 4-1 and later extended his lead to 12-3. It was Srikanth all the way then as it was a tough ask for Sugiarto to plug the gap.
Later, Sindhu raced to a 11-4 lead in the first game even before the Thai opponent could read the Indian's game. But the Thai player crawled back with some hefty winners to draw close at 10-14 but Sindhu kept her composure to wrap the first game 21-12.
The second game was more evenly contested and with both the players deadlocked at 7-7 at one stage, it looked like it was anybody's game. At 17-15, Sindhu had the slight advantage and used her experience to wrap up the match in quick time at 21-15.
