Chess Olympiad 2024, Round 10 Highlights: India beat USA; Gukesh beats Caruana; Arjun hands Perez a loss; Vidit holds Aronian; Pragg loses to Wesley; Women beat China 2.5-1.5

Perez succumbs and Arjun hits the final nail in the coffin as India beats USA 2.5-1.5 and has landed one leg on the gold medal. 

Vidit holds Levon Aronian after playing a gruelling Italian game. It’s 1.5-1.5 with the Arjun vs Perez game left. 

And there comes the customary handshake between Guo Qi and Vaishali after the match which means India beat China 2.5-1.5 and its hope for gold is well alive! 

Arjun is grinding and nothing less than a win would suffice for him. Leinier Dominguez Perez, meanwhile is trying his best to defend a losing position. 

Vaishali is fighting back against Guo Qi and if she is able to draw this game, India will win 2.5-1.5. 

And Caruana resigns! Gukesh registers the first win for India in this round.

Gukesh is now two pawns up against Caruana, he is smelling a win here.

Chess Olympiad 2024 Points Table: India men on top after round 9, Kazakhstan dethrones India in women’s section

India held its two-point lead in the open section after drawing the ninth-round match against the defending champion Uzbekistan at the Chess Olympiad 2024 on Friday at the SYMA Sports and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary.

Wesley So beat Praggnanandhaa, handing him his first loss of the tournament. It’s 1-0 in the USA’s favour as of now. 

Gukesh has turned the tides and he is also winning after Caruana made two back-to-back inaccurate queen moves -- b6 and g5. 

Big big win for Divya Deshmukh who has been just unstoppable in this tournament. What a talent! 

Vantika played out a very solid game against Miaoyi Lu and the pair agreed to a draw via three-fold repetition. 

Arjun is gunning for his eighth win in this tournament. He has cornered Dominguez Perez completely. 

The experienced Levon Aronian is putting Vidit Gujrathi under some pressure here. Although the position is roundabout equal, the Indian has only a little over seven minutes on his clock and he has to make seven more accurate moves before 30 additional minutes will be added. 

Draw by three-fold repetition in the Harika vs Zhu Jiner game. Not a bad result on the top board considering Harika’s current form. 

Vaishali has a 12-minute time advantage over Guo Qi but the latter has a favourable position at the moment with white pieces. Vaishali needs to hold this. 

Divya, meanwhile has also manoeuvred her pieces well to get into a good position against Ni Shiqun. 

Arjun has a plus-one advantage against Dominguez Perez. India needs him to strike with the white pieces here. He also has a nine-minute advantage at the moment. 

Keep an eye on the Kazakh women who displaced India at the top of the points table. If India wins and Kazakh draws then it’ll be India who will dethrone the latter for the gold medal position ahead of the last round. 

Harika Dronavalli is 12 minutes down on the clock against Zhu Jiner on the top board. The pair is engaged in the Moscow Variation of Sicilian Defense. 

A beautiful capture by Stev Bonhage which has Gukesh in the centre ahead of his ninth round match against Abdusattorov. 

Meanwhile, things are not looking very promising for the Uzbek team. Nodirbek Abdusattorov played two inaccurate moves against Ding Liren to give a huge advantage to the current world champion. 

White pawn takes, a check from black’s dark-squared bishop and white’s knight to c3 block means it’s a closed Catalan game in the first board of the open section in Gukesh vs Caruana game.

Chebanenko Variation of Slav Defense has been played in the board no. 3 between Arjun and Dominguez Perez.
