IND vs WI 1st Test, Day 1 Highlights: India 80/0 (23); West Indies 150 all out after Ashwin fifer; Stumps on Day 1

India in total control of the Test match after the first day’s play. Rohit and debutant Jaiswal have taken it to a comfortable 80/0 at the end of the day. The 21-year-old has looked confident at the crease, even pulling out a reserve-sweep towards the end of the day’s play.

Earlier, Ashwin’s 33rd Test match fifer derailed the West Indian innings, with only debutant Alick Athanaze able to provide a sizeable contribution to the total of 150.

Four!! Warrican to Jaiswal, reverse swept through point for four! On leg-stump line, Jaiswal comes down the ground and drives it past mid-wicket for a single. Five off the last over of the day. Stumps Day 1.

Holder to Rohit, on length, wide outside off stump, Rohit leaves. Length on off-stump this time, Rohit defends. Yorker length, Rohit jams it into the ground. Almost rolled back on to the stumps. Maiden over.

Warrican to Rohit, full on the stumps, Rohit defends onto leg-side. Rohit drives another fuller one down the ground to long-off for a single. Appeal for LBW but umpire says no. Looked to be missing leg.

Holder to Jaiswal, back-of-a-length on off stump, defended off the back foot to cover. Holder goes wide, Jaiswal tries to get bat on it but misses. Beaten!! Holder takes it away with the angle and beats Jaiswal’s forward press defence. Four!! Full and outside-off, Jaiswal drives it past cover for a boundary.

Warrican to Rohit, full and straight, defended right back to the bowler. Full again, driven to long off for a single. A single to long-on off the last ball.

Holder to Jaiswal, full and angling away from the left-hander, Jaiswal leaves. Holder persists with the line and Jaiswal happy to continue leaving. Maiden over.

Warrican to continue. Back-of-a-length on the stump, Jaiswal drives it past a diving midwicket for a single. Just a single off the over.

Holder into the attack. Single off the first ball as Rohit turns it to backward square. A slight drizzle has ensued at the venue. Umpires calling the players back in. Only a short delay as play resumes.

Warrican to Rohit, solid press from Rohit and defended onto the off-side. Warrican keeping it full and forcing Rohit to press forward. A short-leg is in position for a catching opportunity. Four!! Jaiswal makes room and cuts the last ball of the over to the boundary.

Cornwall to Jaiswal, full on off stump, Jaiswal presses forward and defends. Four!! Slightly shorter, Jaiswal rocks back and cuts past point for a boundary. Sharp turn there for Cornwall, was nicely flighted. Full down leg, Jaiswal sweeps to fine leg for a couple.

Jomel Warrican into the attack. Six!! Full on the stumps, Rohit lofts is over mid-wicket for a six. Slightly slingy action from wide of the crease, angles in to Rohit, solidly defended. DRINKS.

Cornwall to Rohit, Rohit steps down and defends on the leg-side for a single. Jaiswal goes down on one knee and sweeps to the right of square leg for a couple.

Joseph to continue. Four!! Over-pitched on the stumps and Rohit presents the full face of the bat to drive it down the ground for a boundary. Drifting down leg, hits Rohit’s pads. A leg-bye taken.

Rahkeem Cornwall continues. Jaiswal dispatched the flighted delivery near the deep point for a couple of runs. Jaiswal swings it hard and missed it as Cornwall tossed up the ball and gets a decent spin. Three off the over. A sedate start from openers to get near 50 after first 10 overs.

Change of ends for Alzarri Joseph as Roach makes way for him from his end. Joseph to Rohit, FOUR! Seamed up delivery, Rohit gets a lucky inside edge which went across the stumps after hitting his toe and runs away towards fine leg. Rohit looks in pain but still continues. Joseph to Jaiswal, two runs. Jaiswal tries for an on-the-rise drive but the awkward length helped the ball get an outside edge. Four runs off the over.

The first change in the bowling attack. Rahkeem Cornwall comes into the attack for Alzarri Joesph. Cornwall to Jaiswal, FOUR! Flighted delivery and Jaiswal transfers his weight to slog sweep the middle line ball deep square leg. Five off the over.

An eventful over by Kemar Roach where he was convinced about Rohit’s wicket on the second delivery which was sliding down the leg and Rohit tries to flick it away but misses it. Roach wanted a review but West Indies did not go for it as it was indeed a good decision as the ball went way past the bat with a gap. A single off this over.

Alzarri to Jaiswal, FOUR! Wow, what a way to get off the mark and take your first runs in international cricket! Alzarri bowls another short ball, and Jaiswal stands firm and cuts it away at backward point. Alzarri follows it up with another short ball, this time onto the body and Jaiswal pulls it nicely but a fielder at deep mid-wicket will make sure the batter gets only a single. Rohit takes a single off the last ball and takes the strike in the next over.

Rohit takes a couple of runs on the first ball and then played the rest of the over with five dots.

Alzarri Joseph deceives Jaiswal with his pace and was successful to get an edge, however, it did not carry to the slip and fell ahead of Jason Holder at the second slip. He changed his length and followed it up with a short ball down the leg side for Jaiswal. Alzarri to Jaiswal, FOUR BYES! Banged in short and Da Silva managed to put on his gloves while trying to catch the ball but all he could manage is to push the ball away at the boundary. Jaiswal looks to get off the mark but he’ll have to wait for the next over.

Rohit leaves Roach’s first ball of the over then blocks it and then pushed it to the covers before taking full advantage of a low full toss by Roach as he guides it away in the point region for a FOUR! Two dot balls to end the over.

Alzarri Joseph to bowl from the other end. He starts with a length delivery. Alzarri to Rohit, FIVE WIDES! Josephy makes an error in the line as the ball went way down the line, making it impossible for keeper Da Silva to carry it. Alzarri to Rohit, FOUR! Pure class from the captain. He reads the length of the ball and delivers a wonderful short-arm jab - pull with one leg in the air. Alzarri to Rohit hits the knee roll and a huge appeal from in-field players. The umpire deny due to the length and DRS from West Indies confirms the same. Alzarri follows it up with a short one, swinging away for Rohit and another half-hearted appeal for caught behind followed, but nothing conclusive as the ball and bat had a huge gap. Rohit takes a single off the last delivery to end an eventful over.

Kemar Roach starts with a short ball, angling down the leg as Jaiswal swivels to play fine but misses his first ball on debut. Jaiswal leaves the second ball. Roach targets the off-stump line this time and Jaiswal gets behind the line to defend it. He plays out the rest of the over with utmost care, a maiden to start with for Roach.

Ashwin continues. Ashwin to Warican, OUT! Another seamed up flighted delivery which went to the short leg off the gloves of batter and Gill makes a full stretched drive to complete the catch. Umpires refer the decision to the third umpire for a review and there we go, Ashwin gets his five-wicket-haul, 33rd fifer in Tests, West Indies all out at 150 and a clinical bowling performance led India to bundle Windies cheaply.

Ashwin’s search for his fifth continues. Cornwall played out three balls before taking a single and Warican somehow managed to keep his wicket intact in the last three balls.

Jadeja to Roach, hits the pads first, close call as an aggressive appeal followed by India. Umpire denies and India takes review. WICKET! Ball tracking and wicket hitting as India retains its review and Roach walks off, India gets its ninth. Jomel Warrican is the last man in. A wicket maiden from Jadeja.

India continues to strengthen its grip on the Test match. Despite Holder and Athanaze, building a good partnership, the hosts continued to lose wickets in a bunch. Joshua Da Silva was dismissed early in the session. After the solid partnership, Holder was caught off a short ball at square leg. Ashwin back into the attack. Full on the stumps, Holder defends straight back to the bowler. Holder tries to turn one on the leg-side, not under control and it falls short of Rohit at mid-wicket. Ashwin goes full, Holder drives to long on for a single. Athanaze drives through the covers and will get a single. Holder comes down the track and lofts it over the leg-side, the fielder in the deep does well to prevent a boundary.

Going down the leg-side and India lose a review. Back-of-a-length outside off, Da Silva tries to guide it past gully, but the fielder does well to stop it. Thakur goes short and Da Silva pulls to midwicket, no timing though and the batters only get a single. Thakur gets the edge but it rolls past slip for a couple. Was played with soft hands by Athanaze.

Jadeja from the other end. Full on the stumps, Da Silva defends off the back foot. Fuller and Da Silva defends on the off-side for a single. Four!! Athanaze plays a lovely drive between cover and mid-off and the ball races away to the boundary. Five off the over.

Thakur to bowl the first over post lunch. Back-of-a-length on the stumps and Athanaze defends straight back to the bowler. Similar length outside off-stump this time, and Athanaze defends to cover. Outside off again and the batter leaves it through to the keeper. Maiden over to start.

India will be the happier team going back to the dressing room after the session’s play. West Indies forged a slow, yet solid-looking opening partnership as Tagenarine Chanderpaul and captain Kraigg Brathwaite added 31 runs in 12.5 overs before India’s spin maestro Ashwin decided to show his mastery. India picked four wickets in the next 15 overs to leave West Indies at 68 for four at lunch.

Jadeja bowls his second. Blackwood gets a couple on the second ball. Jadeja to Blackwood, OUT! Siraj, you beauty! This catch should go to the pacer as he jumped on his back to complete an unbelievable catch. What an effort from Siraj as he seemed to injure his elbow during the process as well, but nothing serious as India strikes fourth just at the stroke of lunch. Full and floated from Jadeja and Blackwood tried to go for a big shot but Siraj at mid-off completed a stunner to deny him anything. And with his the lunch has been taken.

Spin Twin for the first time in the Test. Ashwin from the other end after Jadeja. Three runs come from it.

Ravindra Jadeja has been called in the attack and he replaces Thakur. Jadeja to Athanaze, FOUR! Athananze welcomes the left-armer with a boundary. Perfectly timed sweep that fetched a boundary to Athanaze at backward square leg region. Jadeja ends with five dot balls.

Another quick over from Ashwin as we move closer to lunch. Blackwood managed to get a couple as two runs come from it.

Shardul continues. Shardul to Athanaze, FOUR! Short and onto the hips, nicely played by the young man as he waited for the ball to come and pulled it past backward square leg. Nice comeback from Thakur to end the over with four dot balls.

Blackwood takes a single off Ashwin’s fifth delivery to bring fifty up for West Indies. Just a single off the over.

Another change in bowling as Shardul Thakur comes in for Siraj from the other end. He keeps the first two balls full, on off-stumps as Reifer plays out both dots. Thakur to Reifer, OUT! Shardul strikes in his first over and his knack of taking wickets at the right moments comes to the fore once again. He kept the length the same and slightly changed the line towards the fourth-fifth stump, forcing Reifer to play the shot and giving the edge to Kishan, who dived on his left and completed a brilliant catch. India gets third and it is the debutant, Alick Athanaze comes in the middle. Athanaze gets off the mark with a confident cover drive that fetched him two runs. 20 overs gone, West Indies 49/3.

Ashwin beats Blackwood as the ball strikes the thigh pads. A couple of singles in the next two balls. Ashwin to Blackwood, FOUR! Lovely shot from Blackwood. He leans forward, reads the line of the ball early and drives the floated delivery past extra covers for a boundary. Six runs come from the 19th over.

Siraj starts with a bouncer which was way too high for the batter as the umpire adjourned it as a wide. Reifer gets off the mark on the fifth ball with a quick single and Blackwood too gets his first runs with a single off the last ball as he keeps the strike against Ashwin in the next over.

Ashwin with his fifth over. Ashwin to Brathwaite, beaten! The ball kept going away from the batter and eventually misses the outside edge of Brathwaite. Ashwin to Brathwaite, OUT! Bad shot from the captain as he tried to release the pressure by going for a big shot which produced a leading edge to Rohit at covers, who makes no mistake to help India get the second breakthrough. Jermaine Blackwood, the new man comes in at number four. Ashwin to Blackwood, huge appeal for LBW but the umpire is not convinced. India takes the review but Blackwood survives because of the umpire’s call. Another successful over ends for Ashwin with a wicket and a maiden.

Raymon Reifer is yet to get off the mark and Siraj makes sure that his wait continues more as he bowls a maiden, beating Reifer twice in two balls with lovely deliveries. First, it bounced off as it was bowled on some different surface. Pressure mounts on West Indies.

Brathwaite takes a couple of the third ball before playing two dots in Ashwin’s over. Ashwin to Brathwaite, FOUR! Swept nicely by Brathwaite to get a boundary. Six off the over.

Siraj continues. Gives only a single.

Ashwin continues with his end. Chanderpaul shows solid defence to play our four-dot deliveries. Ashwin to Chanderpaul, OUT! Castled this time! Talking about solid defence, Ashwin knows how to breach it. A peach of a delivery, flighted and drifting in that lured Chanderpaul to lean in and defend as the ball moved away enough to beat his outside edge and crashes onto the off stump. India gets the first wicket. Raymon Reifer comes in at number three. Ashwin to Reifer, a huge appeal for LBW but height seems the issue here as Ashwin ends a successful maiden over.

Change in ends for Siraj as he replaces Unadkat from his end. Siraj to Bathwaite, 1, angling away again and Brathwaite guides it to the leg side for an easy single to start the over. Chanderpaul gives the strike back on the third ball before Brathwaite plays out the rest of the over. A decent start for the West Indies, with both batters surviving the new ball attack of India.

Ashwin bowls six dots to Chanderpaul to finish this over with a maiden.

Unadkat continues with his fifth over from the other end. He gives three off this over as West Indies managed 29 without any loss of wickets in the first 10 overs.

The first change in bowling, Ravichandran Ashwin comes in for Mohammed Siraj. Ashwin to Chanderpual, close! Almost a wicket as Ashwin starts with a flighted ball which went straight and Chaderpaul gets a lucky single off an inside edge. Ashwin to Brathwaite, FOUR! Confidently played over mid-wicket for a boundary. Five off Ashwin’s first over.

Unadkat bowls the first two balls over the wicket to Brathwaite before changing the angle as he goes around the wicket, in search of the first breakthrough. Unadkat to Brathwaite missed! A close one. He uses his angle well to deliver the ball with slight movement, off the air that goes past Brathwaite. Unadkat bowls another ripper that leaves Brathwaite stranded as the ball swings in late as Kishan moves on his left to carry the ball. A second maiden from Unadkat.

Siraj with his fourth over. Siraj to Brathwaite, FOUR! Siraj misses his line this time and bowls across as the ball angled down the leg for Brathwaite and a nudge off his thigh pads runs past a diving Kishan for a boundary via leg byes. Brathwaite takes a single in the following delivery and Chanderpaul plays out the rest of over with solid defence.

Unadkat is troubling Chanderpaul with his line. He is able to hit the right areas forcing Chanderpaul to show his bat and gets beaten on multiple occasions. Two off the over.

Siraj keeps it full to Chanderpaul, he obnoxiously defends it on the back foot with his unorthodox stance as the ball races past mid-off region for a double. Siraj looks lethal with his tight lines, he keeps it on the fourth stump line and Chanderpaul missed the line by an inch. Five off the over, WI 14 for no loss.

Unadkat slowly finds his rhythm and he is angling his delivery closer to batters. Just a single via byes after Kishan missed an away angling delivery on the third ball.

Siraj comes up from the other end. He beats Brathwaite twice with lovely outswingers. He persists with the channel of uncertainty and leaves Brathwaite confused at least thrice in three bowls. First maiden of the Test. Three gone, WI 8/0.

Jaydev Unadkat has been given the new ball from the other end. The left-arm pacer is playing his third Test in 13 years! Unadkat starts with good length delivery and Chanderpaul defends with confidentially. Chanderpaul takes his first runs in the penultimate delivery of the over. He punches the short-length ball for a couple of runs and keeps the strike. Unadkat persists with another short one, and Chanderpaul leaves it—two off this over, WI eight for no loss after two.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul come in the middle as Siraj takes the new ball for India. Brathwaite is on strike and Siraj starts with a full-length inswinger onto the toes. After playing three dots, Brathwaite tucks the length ball behind the square to get a double and open his account with this. Siraj to Brathwaite, FOUR! fuller length, Siraj misses his line as the ball goes down the line and Brathwaite does enough to guide it fine for a boundary to end the over. Six off the first over.

A few decades ago, a tour of the West Indies was an essential rite of passage. It separated the men from the boys, gifted a halo to those who flourished, and left those who failed with broken bones and punctured egos.

Cut to the present, and a visit to the archipelago of island nations united by cricket is deemed an easy tour. Records can be etched and victories can be scripted, but for those caught up in the nostalgia of a team that once had swashbuckling batters and fearsome speedsters, there is only a soul-numbing sadness to cope with. Kraigg Brathwaite’s men, in Tests, need to salvage an ancient pride rippling beneath the Caribbean sands. The Windies tend to do relatively well in T20Is while wilting in Tests and ODIs. This slide has to be arrested.
