NZ vs AFG Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: Rashid, Farooqi pick four as Afghanistan beats New Zealand by 84 runs

Farooqi returns. WICKET!! Henry looks to play the hook, gets the top edge and fine leg completes the catch. Four-fer for Fazalhaq and Afghanistan hammer New Zealand to make it two from two. 

Naveen returns. Full and straight, driven to long on for a single. Yorker length, appeal for lbw but was probably going down leg. Just two runs from the over. 

Noor into the attack. Six!! Henry lofts one over long on, got good connection on that. Ten runs from the over. 

Ferguson in at 10. Rashid with his fourth over. WICKET!!! Ferguson prods forward and looks to turn one legside, hands a simple return catch to Rashid.

Nabi to bowl out. Santner gets a couple to midwicket. WICKET!! One that comes in with the arm, beats Santner all ends up. Just a matter of time now for Afghanistan.

Rashid continues. Googly on off stump, Henry prods forward and defends. Wider this time, beats Henry’s attempted cut. Another play and miss outside off stump. Just a solitary wide from the over. 

Nabi continues. Phillips goes for the slog, the turn foxes him and the ball rolls on the ground to deep square. A couple of singles follow. WICKET!!! Phillips tries to loft one down the ground, only manages to find long on. New Zealand imploding here in Guyana.

WICKET!! Quicker flatter delivery, Chapman misses his pull shot and is bowled.

Santner in at 8. Takes a quick single to get off the mark, scratch that, legbyes given. Four!! Too short and Phillips pulls it to square leg for a boundary. Santner beaten on the outside edge, stifled appeals from Gurbaz but review not taken. 

Nabi back into the attack. Chapman gets a single to cover. Phillips follows suit. Chapman goes for the reverse sweep, can’t get it past slip. Three from the over. 

Rashid into the attack. WICKET!!! Gets the opposition captain first ball. Back of a length outside off, Williamson guides it straight into the waiting hands of first slip.

Farooqi with his third over on the trot. WICKET!! Three for Farooqi!! Back of a length, leaving the batter, catches Mitchell’s edge on the way to the keeper.

Glenn Phillips in at 5. Leading edge as Phillips looks to turn one to the legside, just past Rashid running across from mid on. 

Naveen into the attack. Traps Williamson in front first ball, but it is not given on field. Rashid goes for the review. Umpire’s call on hitting and Williamson just about survives. Tight line and length, Williamson forced to defend. Four!! A touch too wide, Williamson guides it over backward point for a boundary. Six from the over. 

Farooqi again. Williamson moves slightly across and is rapped on the pads. Not given and they decide against the review this time. Four!! Slightly wider to Conway, goes for the expansive shot, the outside edge just beats short third and runs away for four. WICKET!! Held in the pitch and Conway gifts a simple catch to short extra cover.

Daryl Mitchell in at 4. Four!! On the pads, Mitchell gets it past short fine and to the boundary. 

Nabi into the attack. Finds the outside edge first ball, but it is past the lone slip fielder, Conway gets a couple. Big appeal for LBW! Umpire says no. Afghanistan opt for the review. Ball tracking shows impact outside off as Conway looked to sweep. Just four runs from the over. 

WICKET!! Perfect start for Afghanistan. Full and swinging in, Allen goes for a mighty loft, the inward swing does him in and the stumps are broken.

Finn Allen b Fazalhaq Farooqi 0(1)

Williamson in at 3. Solid frint-foot defence first ball. Solid cover drive, the deep cover fielder runs across and prevents a boundary. 3 runs taken. Down leg against Conway, clips his pads and rolls to fine leg. Full and swinging away, beats Conway all ends up. 7 from the first over. 

Finn Allen and Devon Conway to open for New Zealand. Fazalhaq Farooqi with the new ball in hand. 

Boult to bowl the final over. Nails the wide yorker to perfection, the ball goes to the keeper and Rashid has to sacrifice his wicket for his side as he is run out at the non-striker’s end. Two in two! Another pefect yorker and Gurbaz fails to meet the ball as the stumps light up! Hat-trick delivery, Gulbadin misses the full toss and is trapped leg before, huge appeal from Boult but the umpire is unmoved. DRS taken. Pitching outside leg and NZ loses a review. Three wickets in an over! Gulbadin tried to take the arial route but hits it straight to Phillips! A single to finish the innings. Afghanistan ends up with 159/6 on board!

Daryl Mitchell to bowl the penultimate over. And Gurbaz welcomes him with a huge SIX! In the arc and it is outside the park! Mitchell misses the yorker and Gurbaz smokes it for a SIX! Huge over for Afghanistan, 16 off it 

Ferguson replaces Santner. Back of a length delivery and Gurbaz hits it hard and staright for a FOUR! That’s another one, full toss, wide outside off, Gurbaz makes full use of it and smacks it over covers for a FOUR! Nabi gone for a golden duck! Ferguson takes pace off the ball and Nabi gets decieved as he miscues it towards Williamson. Oooh.. Rashid Khan has promoted himself up the order. Short and wide outside off, Rashid swings at it, it takes an outside edge and runs away for a FOUR! 

Henry continues. Short and straight, Omarzai times it to perfection with a pull as the ball sails into the stands for a SIX! Another one! Short again and Omarzai stands and delivers! OUT! Henry goes full and targets middle and leg, Omarzai makes room for himself and lofts but doesn’t get the desired connection as Ferguson takes an easy catch near the boundary rope. Nabi is the next batter in. 

Santner continues. Just a couple of singles off the first three deliveries. Ful and slightly outside off, Omarzai smacks it over covers for a FOUR

Henry replaces Boult. He surprises Gurbaz with a short one, a miscue but it lands safe in between three NZ fielders. It has been that kind of a night for the Kiwis. A SIGH OF RELIEF FOR NEW ZEALAND FINALLY! Short from Henry, Ibrahim tried to loft it over extra cover but drags the ball onto his stumps! Azmatullah Omarzai is in at three

Santner replaces Ferguson. Wonderful running between the wickets from Gurbaz and Ibrahim as they get an unlikely double. Gurbaz takes a single and that’s 100 up for Afghanistan. Good passage of play for Rashid Khan’s men

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran registered their second consecutive hundred-run partnership in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 during the match against New Zealand in Guyana on Saturday.

Boult is back into the attack, replaces Bracewell. Short and outside off, Gurbaz goes down the track and hits it straight for a SIX! Boult cramps Gurbaz for space, he tucks it close but steals a single. Short and pace off the ball, Gurbaz plays it for a single and brings up his 50!

Lockie Ferguson replaces Santner. Full and straight, Gurbaz hits it straight at the non-striker’s stumps. Ibrahim was a good couple of yards outside as Ferguson uproots the stumps. Umpire decides to go upstairs. Replays show Ibrahim reached back just in time. Good over from Ferguson, just two runs came off it 

Mitchell Bracewell replaces Henry. Full and just outside off, Gurbaz comes down the track and hits it hard but there’s protection in the deep, single. Tidy over, just three off it 

Santner continues. Wide outside off, Gurbaz plays it late towards short third. Mix-up in the middle but Conway misses an easy run-out opportunity. Dreadful start from New Zealand. Santner straightens this and the ball drifts onto Ibrahim’s pads. Huge shout and it’s given! But Ibrahim decides to take the DRS and what a call that was, replay shows the ball was indeed missing the stumps! Slightly full and outside off, Ibrahim opens the face of the bat and lofts it over covers for a FOUR! 

Change of ends for Henry as he repalces Boult. Back of a length, Ibrahim gives himself room but is decieved by the change of pace as he skies it but it falls safe. A HUGE CHANCE GOES BEGGING! Henry went towards the middle and leg, Ibrahim lofted it straight to Finn Allen at deep backward square and he missed a sitter

Mitchell Santner replaces Henry. He goes full to start things off as Gurbaz is trapped leg before. Huge appeal but the umpire thinks otherwise, Williamson takes his time to decide against going upstairs. Santner goes legside, the ball takes a deflection off Gurbaz’ pads and runs fine, couple of runs collected. Much straighter this time, Gurbaz goes down the track but it takes a thick inside edge, beats the keeper and runs away for a FOUR! 

Boult continues. Just one off the first three deliveries. Slightly short from Boult and he angles it in towards Gurbaz as he takes one on his pads, muted appeal from the bowler but the umpire is unmoved, leg byes given. Tight over, just four off it 

Matt Henry to bowl the second. Short and just outside off, Ibrahim jabs it between the cover and point fielder to collect a double. Henry angles it inside this time, Ibrahim swings and it takes an inside edge and runs past the keeper for a FOUR! Towards the pads and Ibrahim flicks it towards the legside for another FOUR! A missed opportunity? It looked like the ball took a deflection off Ibrahim’s gloves but Conway fails to pouch it. Leg-byes given eventually. Back of a length and outside off this time, Gurbaz goes down the track but it takes an outside edge and runs away for a FOUR! It’s been that kind of a start for the Afghans. Expensive over for NZ

Hint of swing from Boult as he bowls a low full toss, Gurbaz flicks it, the ball was in the air for a while but it safe, double and it’s first runs on the board.
