Advani, Sitwala to feature in Western India Billiards and Snooker Championship

Multiple-time world champion Pankaj Advani and the current Asian and national billiards champion Dhruv Sitwala will be among the competitors at the Western India Billiards and Snooker Championship starting here on August 3.

The competitions will feature three categories: senior billiards, senior snooker and junior snooker.

It will also feature the current national snooker champion Sourav Kothari, Aditya Mehta, Laxman Rawat, Rupesh Shah, Dhvaj Haria, Alok Kumar, Siddharth Parikh and S Srikrishna.

The senior snooker champion will get a prize money of Rs 2 lakh and the runner-up will get Rs 1.2 lakh.

The senior billiards winner will get Rs 1 lakh and the runner-up will get Rs 50,000. The winner and runner-up in the junior category will get an amount of 40,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

“There will also be prizes in the senior events for players who reach the last 16 and cash awards for the top breaks,” said the organisers in a release, adding that the tournament is organised by Khar Gymkhana along with the Billiards & Snooker Association of Maharashtra (BSAM) and the Billiards & Snooker Federation of India

TN State-ranking billiards and snooker c’ship: Anupama completes sweet double

After clinching the billiards title, Chennai’s Anupama Ramachandran (MCC) did one better to defeat L. Shruti (Buddies) 3-1 for the snooker title in the TNBSA 40th Tamil Nadu State-ranking billiards and snooker championship for women at the PBSA here on Tuesday.

Shruti started well to take the opening frame with a break of 23. But Anupama, an Asian snooker champion, managed to win a keenly contested second frame on a black ball. Thereafter, she controlled the next two frames with small breaks to wrest the title.

Earlier, Neena Praveen (TNBSA) scored a 2-0 win over Sreenidhi Anbarasan (Buddies) for the third slot.

BASKETBALL

National basketball academy set up in Mumbai

The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) has set up the National basketball academy in collaboration with Corvuss American Academy in Mumbai.

For a start, the academy will run with 30 boys and 30 girls from the school.

There will be a nationwide hunt for talent to select 30 boys and 30 girls for the academy.

These players will be under the guidance of a competent foreign coach. The partner institution will provide a comprehensive academic program, nutritional support, sports counselling, training and access to world-class facilities for the trainees.

The players in the academy will be free to represent their States in the State and national championships.

“It is a significant step forward in our effort to promote basketball. We are committed to providing a platform for young talent to flourish and compete at the highest levels,” said the president of BFI, Aadhav Arjuna.

CITI Open: Yuki loses early in Washington

Yuki Bhambri in partnership with Albano Olivetti was beaten in the doubles pre-quarterfinals by Sadio Doumbia and Hugo Nys in the $2,271,715 ATP tennis tournament in Washington, USA.

The Indo-French pair collected $9,010 for the early exit, which did not fetch any ATP points.

Services Championships: Gulveer breaks meet record, Uttam joins javelin throw’s 80m club

Asian bronze medallist Gulveer Singh bettered the men’s 5000m meet record in the 73rd Services athletics championships at the SAI-LNCPE Stadium here on Tuesday.

Gulveer, the national record holder (13:18.92s) from the Army, clocked 13:35.07s for the gold.

On Monday, the championship’s opening day, Army’s B. Uttam Patil entered the 80m club in the javelin throw while winning the gold with a personal best of 80.42m.

In the men’s 1500m, Yoonus Shah upset international Parvej Khan to win the 1500m with a new meet record time of 3:41.32s, while H. Manikanta emerged as the fastest man, winning the 100m in 10.49s.

Brigadier Salil M.P., Station Commander, Thiruvananthapuram, opened the meet, which is organised by the Indian Navy Sports Control Board.
