India’s medal tally at the Under-17 World Wrestling Championships in Amman, Jordan, got off to a strong start on Tuesday, thanks to Ronak Dahiya’s impressive performance, as he clinched a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman 110 kg category.
Ronak, the current world No. 2, defeated Turkiye’s Emrullah Capkan 6-1 in the bronze medal match. Previously, the Indian had lost in his semifinal 0-2 to Hungary’s Zoltan Czako.
Ronak, who trains at Delhi’s famous Chhatrasal Stadium, began his U-17 Worlds campaign with an 8-1 win over Artur Manvelian and followed that up with a commanding technical superiority victory over Daniil Maslakou.
The other Indian in bronze medal contention is Pardhi Sainath.
Pardhi is aiming for bronze in the 51 kg repechage round, where he is set to compete against Munaretto Domenic Michael of the United States.
Pardhi had lost to Tushan Dashdhimirov of Azerbaijan 1-5 in the opening round, and the latter reached the final, giving the Indian a chance to get a shot at the bronze.
Indian women wrestlers in semifinals
Three Indian women wrestlers progressed to the semifinals of the Championships.
Aditi Kumari put up an impressive show against Ukraine’s Karolina Shperyk (10-0) and Marriem Mohamed Abdelaal (4-2) to set up the 43kg semifinal against Aleksandra Berezovskaia.
In 57kg, Neha made it to the semifinals without losing a point. She pinned Greek rival Mairi Mani and then won by technical superiority against Georgia’s Miranda Kapanadze. She is now up against Kazakhstan’s Anna Stratan.
In 65kg, Pulkit dominated China’s Ling Cai for ‘win by fall’ and followed that up with a commanding 9-0 victory against Juliana Catanzaro. She will now fight it out with Egypt’s Maram Ibrahim Aly for a place in the gold-medal bout.
