That DAMN fog

The fog is only there for the tutorial section. Once you pass that, the map opens up and let's you go almost anywhere you want (with the exception of a few bases closed off for story reasons).

Thanks for posting that explanation. I was hating the prospect of such a big and beautiful open world that I couldn't explore. Spent about 40 minutes with the game for the first time tonight and find it quite compelling. I'm glad to hear I'll soon be "off the rails" and able to look around.
