It's a wonderful game, but personally I prefer Return of Rome now (I miss the graphics, the campaigns and the villager selector through the resources HUD, though). I would've loved if there was just ONE remastered version of AOE1 with proper support and content additions, unlike a "definitive" edition and a partial port to AOE2DE.

Part of the problem with Age of Empires (including RoR and AoE: DE) is that its civilizations do not have any unique units. Just unique civ bonuses, different tech tree for each civ, and with RoR team bonuses. RoR should have been split in two instead of one dlc however such as one called "Romans" for AoE II: DE where it costs either $4 or $5 without campaign that adds Romans only or $6 if it includes both Romans and one new campaign while the other can be called "Age of Empires Return of Rome" instead of "Age of Empires II Return of Rome" where it is designed very much like it was originally planned, but with more content for campaigns than AoE: DE even to begin with instead of adding more campaigns from updates meaning that all campaigns from Age of Empires plus its expansion pack could be included and not just some of them, would probably be released later than Romans dlc because it probably should have all campaigns from Age of Empires from the start and not just Return of Rome campaigns, and the possibility for adding other new civs besides just Lac Viet as well from a few dlc (which would probably be only two or three dlc at most for adding new civs/campaigns) even if not as many in comparison to other Age of Empires because of it being a "spin off" of AoE II: DE instead of dlc. Perhaps if Return of Rome was a spin off dlc multiplayer might be more alive as well instead of "dead".

I'd love to see a new Age of Empires game taking place in this timeline like AoE 1 and make less but more unique civilisations. Apart from quality of life improvements that is needed there is nothing more I love than to feel I am unique and different when I am playing as X civilisation and facing off against other civilisations.

For example it make no sense to have three different Greek civilisations in the same game: Greeks, Minoans and Macedonians. Just add them together and make a unique civ and let us choose different ways we want to play and what units we want to make. A bit like the landmark concept for AoEIV, we can choose between different landmarks that let us construct and unlock a specific unit.

There is a lot of potential for a AoE 1 remake, lets hope they see that and make it happen for AoE5 whenever that comes out.
Yeah this is always overshadowed by 2 it's too bad

My reply might be a little late, but AoE V coming is currently a question of "if" and not "when" that would probably be made by Relic Entertainment instead of Forgotten Empires. However, I am betting chances might be more likely that AoE V would be a remake of AoE III: DE instead of AoE: DE unless if there were to be an AoE VI as well in the distant future (somewhere between 2031 and 2036?) where AoE V is a remake AoE: DE (coming between 2026 and 2031?) and AoE VI is a remake of AoE III: DE. While I have considered in the past AoE V or AoE VI being based on the 20th century (1900 until the end of Vietnam War which was 1975) the chances of this happening do not seem likely because of significant changes during this time period and there are plenty of other games that include this time period anyway. Also, AoE VI would probably be the last of the entire Age of Empires series as well and honestly not sure if AoE II: DE and AoE III: DE would still be making dlc by the time AoE VI finally comes out if not coming until sometime between 2031 and 2036. Part of the reason why I think it might take that long for AoE VI to come out is because after that there probably will not ever be an AoE VII.

Me too
Some of you never played the original from '97 and it shows.

I played the original from '98 (original plus expansion) a very long time ago, but the CD stopped working for me a while back where it would not launch anymore (possibly stopped working when I was in 11th or 12th grade but cannot remember the exact year) even before I graduated from high school and do not think that I ever completed all of the campaigns unless if I used cheats but cannot remember since it was a very long time ago. It is also worth pointing out as well that I actually played Age of Empires II (Age of Kings but later purchased Age of Conquerors) before I played Age of Empires from 98'.

Still not enough and I still think that AoE: DE is overall better than RoR. If I were to give them a rating right now I would rate AoE: DE with a 6.5 out of 10, but only give RoR a 5.5 out of 10 rating. What was supposed to be an improvement from AoE: DE with RoR was not good enough. Multiplayer for example sucks on RoR, its newest campaigns suck that are too easy even on hard difficulty, not everyone necessarily likes the new formations/team bonuses on RoR, and it does not even return back all of the original campaigns.

There is 2 function that I miss in AoE 1, which later games do indeed have:

1. Gates in walls
2. Villagers to town-center (ring the bell when there is danger)

Those i dearly miss here. But otherwise I like the simplicity. The other games want too much and add unnecessary features. Like the card system and the deliverys in AoE 3. Not my cup of tea, tbh.

RoR also has better custom scenarios (also known as scenario editor), skirmishes, and custom campaigns than AoE: DE, but I would rather play actual campaigns made by Forgotten Empires/Ensemble Studios than any of this stuff with single player.
